Hi,

Over the last year I've probably done about 7 or 8 beer kits and im getting a little bored with them. It doesnt feel like proper brewing, just mixing the contents of a tin in some water.

However im not sure about making my own wort from scratch, so I've been looking into using tin of malt extract and putting in my own hops etc..

Has anyone got a good starting recipie for extract brewing? Or any general pointers how to go about it.

So far my knowledge is thus:

Boil malt extract for a bit. Steep hops and grain in a muslin or giant t-bag for a bit. Mix both of those with water and ferment.
I've read how I should have 2 types of hops but I dont really get why.

Please help!

Hi There Ginger Ninja I did two extracts until I crossed over to the dark side. My first was a clone of Courage Directors bitter.

clicky.

A good way of starting before moving over to the dark side.

I got the recipe out of Dave lines book but Graham Wheelers book Brew Your own British real ale is probably more comprehensive with recopies for both all grain and extract brews.

Good luck

Hi Ginger Ninja
i used to do extract brews and i think the best bet to start with would be to buy Graham Wheelers "brew your own British real ale" book. In it he explains extract and full mash beers along with loads of recipes!! Each recipe shows quantities for either full mash or extract brew. I used his (earlier edition) book before and got great results - better than a kit but not up to full mash/all grain :thumb:
