Hi, is there any reason I can't make an extract recipe boiling some extract in a stove-top pan with a few litres of water, hops etc, and top up with cold water in the FV in the same way you would a kit?

Cheers,

Rob

There's no reason at all except that you will get a lower utilisation from the hops due to the higher gravity of the wort and you'll have to increase the hop rate to compensate.

If you use Beersmith/Promash/Qbrew or our very own recipe calculator then you can calculate how much you need to adjust. Remember to enter the amount of water as the amount you put in the saucepan rather than the full brewlength.

I see, thanks.

Does all the extract have to be boiled? Couldn't I reduce the quantity by ratio, so if making up 5 gallons but boiling a gallon, I boil 1/5th of a tin of extract. Wort gravity would be the same then.
