Is there a commercial beer of that style that you might like to get close to?

Have been thinking and searching for the same myself. Actually just a well hopped English pale. Something like masterbrew or the Kentish pale ale from marks and Spencer’s. I actually like well carbonated beers so the bottles suit me better than draught.
my english ales tend to have a musty smell at the start which I think maybe down to english hops. I swapped yeast last time to us05 but same result. Thinking of dry hopping with cascade next time.
randy moshers mr squiffy summer ale looks quite good. I will dig it out.
