Do you want a stainless stand or are you happy with painting a steel one?
Quite happy with a Hammerite painted mild steel one . . . Welding isn't a skill I've managed to pick up yet though :(

If you sort out the bits and bring them over, I'm happy to weld it up for you :thumb: - I'm no expert but have welded plenty of things (landrover chassis to microwave stand). I'll show you how to do the welding if you like then you will know in future :thumb:

Martin that's a great offer. I may yet take you up on it, if the local shops are still silly money for simple things. I know I can get the materials for about 20 quid (and have lots left over ), its just putting it together.

I did have a mate that was a welder, but he is now persona non grata due to the way he treated his (now ex) wife and kids.

When I asked a local shop how much it would be to weld up a boiler stand they said 300 quid . . . we made it in 30 minutes from scrap he had at work. I'm going to ask at my gas suppliers (Welding suppliers ) if they know of any reasonable welders locally. . .

So I may well be in touch . . . assuming I can get a pass out for the time it will take to get to you and back

Your can't fault stainless, as a first choice, but I have deep pockets and short arms ;) so its ms and paint for me :(

http://www.shop4steel.com/

Gives some idea of what prices mild steel stock costs. It is also possible to weld MS at home, stainless is more difficult and expensive :(
There are far fewer fab shops out there doing stainless than ms, so they are able to charge a better rate :( for us that is, not them

You could also try an advert on freecycle or similar AM, beer in return for welding?

Might save you a few quid and a shorter journey.

And I received two of these in the post

TankConnectorSS.jpg

These beautiful babies are Custom made 1" BSP tank connectors in 316 stainless steel, and they fit perfectly in the conical . . . Thanks to Bru :thumb:

Your very welcome  , give em a good clean as there is still coolant residue and tiny bits of swarf on them, Glad they fit. To secure them tight I was thinking a threaded bar, two washers and lock nuts with some rubber under the washers, extend it out of the conical to get leverage and when happy remove the bottom nut. On second thoughts I'm sure you have that well figured out.
Keep us updated on the progress as I suspect more will follow the path you are leading, me for one ;)
How did you manage to hook the camera up to the microscope for the photo :D

Very interesting.

I've had my eye on similar plastic conicals for a while.....but the bit at the bottom has always been a concern. I'll be very interested to see how this all turns out as the 180L size would be perfect if I ever get my arse in gear to up my brewlength to 1BBL.

She took it off me  "It's for your Birthday!" . . .

. . . . I mean, that's hardley fair is it? . . . .

. . . . I found them on eBay . . . .

. . . . . I contacted the seller and got him to put one up for sale . . . .

. . . . . I bought it . . . .

. . . . . I paid for it . . .

. . . . I stayed in when it was delivered . . . .

And now she won't let me play with it until my birthday

Oh well . . . . Just have to continue working on the femtobrewery

 My perceptions of you are changing A!
I thought you were in control, Now I know your just a normal man like the rest of us

The conical arrived today  . For the price I am very surprised at the quality of not only the conical, but also the sealing area of the lid, the seal is quite substantial and very robust. I've just spoken to the seller regards the seal as it's screwed into the conical and the screws actually pierce through to the inside. They've had a look at their spec sheet and the screw material isn't stated, so they'd recommend replacing the screws with stainless ones. There are reinforced bulges on the vertical wall where the mounting threads are located. They're around 1" in diameter and will hold some yeast, but it's far better compromise than those cones which have a full rim where the cone meets the vertical wall.
Really looking forward to getting this build underway, thanks for the heads up A

I hope you don't mind me posting this here A, thought it might be a good idea to keep the info in one place :thumb:
