Hi all, i just mixed an EMDE Stout and the smell is intense, the only problem is it smells like burnt black treacle, is this normal? its not like the smell of any other stout ive drank

Do you mean the smell after you have put it in the fermenter?

If so sounds about right the yeast will do its work don't worry and you should end up with a nice pint. :thumb:

Yes before when i poured the extract and water in, before adding the yeast.
Thanks My hopes are higher now. By the way should there be foam, its only been fermenting 40 mins but before i added yeast there was foam but now its gone.
Im new to this stuff

That's fine. The foam you had suggests your wort was well oxygenated, which is good for giving your yeast a good start. Check again in 24 hrs, you should have a foamy head again...this time from fermentation.

I put one of these kits on yesterday, first time i've done one and the smell you describe sounds how mine smelled.
24 hours later, it still smells but not as bad.

Hope you left plenty of head room, mine is almost climbing out of the 5 gal fv

Did you do the 40 pint version?

-Paul

My stouts always do that put the fermenter in a bin bag and leave it alone for 10 days. :thumb:

Oh forgot to say yeah i did the 40 pint version, and i will do the bin bag idea if it gets that way. thanks for the heads up
