Duty rise for wine, and some high-strength sparkling cider

I am glad we rarely buy wine preferring to make it ourselves.



Duty on a bottle of wine has risen on the day after the popular Dry January challenge ended, potentially pushing up the cost of a bottle by 8p.

There is better news for beer drinkers, as duty has been frozen, as it has for cider and scotch whisky.

The announcement on duties was made by Chancellor Philip Hammond in the Budget in October, but comes into force now.

The duty rise for wine, and some high-strength sparkling cider, tracks the Retail Prices Index inflation rate.

Inflation charts the rising cost of living and is used as a marker for some benefit and pension increases.

I guess he must do. I wonder if it will in fact push a few people to look to make their own wine (and in our direction)

My wows turn out about 85p per bottle and way better than cheap supermarket versions, 8p a bottle won't make a difference to 99.9 % of buyers though I reckon.

Its nothing compared to when ASDA went from 4 for £5 to 4 for £6 on bottles ale. But could be used as a reason for an all round price hike though wine is very competitive between retailers.

I get my beer from ASDA and thought it was 3 for £5 (matching the bargain booze offer at the time) then they upped it to 4 for £6.

The best thing that ASDA schmasda could do is start stocking WGJ again. What a shocking calamity the disappearance of that was / is. They have no problem selling junk like moon-grown organic beetroot juice and other crapola which nobody except readers of 'Superfoods 4 U' magazine might buy once.

It was a few years ago but the one nearest me did 4 for £5 then changed to 4 for £6 inline with Tesco (Tesco express is 3 for £5).

They definitely were 4 for £5.00 here as well. I used to get swmbo to buy 4 Charlie Wells Triple hopped for me if she was ever in there.

It was a shame all supermarkets (well most) stopped selling WGJ the excuse at the time was a ruined crop meant they had to use the lesser grapes for wine causing the shortage for juice drink but that was years ago why is it not more widely available now.

I think that lame excuse has ran its course. I reckon ( seriously ) that they figured they were losing money on 'real' wine sales due to so many folk cottoning on to the fact that they could make it for next to nowt and in no time flat from WGJ. Why did the crop fail then and in all the years since? Don't tell me.... climate change? Shouldn't we growing enough of our own grapes to go around by now?

A good theory Gunge, red grape juice has not suffered the same demise do you think that's because red wine drinkers cannot make a decent red from grape juice?

Quite probably.... the red wine I once made from ASDA's grape juice was dire; stuff made from white juice was very, very good.

I was gutted when wgj was pulled but you can make a decent rose wine with rgj and apple.
