Got my car insurance renewal today and guess what is gone up. Had 3 points for speeding :cry: that have expired but did not send my licence off to have them removed. Reading the DVLA website it looks like they stay there until you send off the licence for removal, if that's the case the insurance may have including them for the last 2 years, any one know if that's the case or will our friendly insurance people just take them off when they calculate how much thay will rob me for.

If I recall correctly, points are active on a licence for 3 years and you can pay the DVLA to remove them after a further year, most insurance companies ask about points going back 5 years.
When I sent my driving licence off for the photo card renewal, it came back with a clean paper part.

Bang on the money, the points are current for 3 years from date of conviction / acceptance of a fixed penalty. Insurance companies ask you the question re 5 years. Go careful on years 4 and 5. If you say no and they insure on that basis and you then have a claim which they investigate and find you had points within their 5 year criteria and didn't disclose it they will rub their hands with glee as you will be getting nothing from them and worst case scenario you could then be liable for big bucks if you were at fault and teh other side wants a shitload of cash out of you.... An SP30 speeding fine does not usually make any difference to your insurance premium.

Reading the DVLA site the wording seems to imply the points will only be removed if you send the licence back to them and as I still have an old style paper one, showing my age, it will cost me £30 to do it, or are they automatically removed for the system when your time is up.

Dennis i've just updated my licence to the new one with the photo on it , i didn't need to send a photo because they took it from the passport photo they have , plus they took the 3 points off my licence that i had on it that expired many moons ago ... so it cost me naff all , if you need anymore info what i haven't mentioned ... just fire the questions here

Just had a talk to the wife about this , we moved to Warrington ... so there was a change of address , thats why there was no charge ... sorry about this if i was misleading you , but i defo didn't have to send a picture in .... as i said they took it from my passport .

How true Dennis , when i got my first licence back in 1976 ... they charged me £5 and said that it was for life , now its something like £50 and all kinds of charges ... photo's ect .
Well rip off Britain will never change .

The other scam that they pull is a paper license is valid until you're 70, when you change to a photocard license you have to "renew" it every 10 years i think it was and you have to pay for the privilage. Robbing bast*rds :x

An if you're a 'professional' driver you will most likely also have a digi tacho card which needs renewing on a similar basis :x :nono:

And also as a Professional LGV driver when you reach the ripe old age of 45 you will need to have a MEDICAL and every 5 years after that and there not cheap either.

And the training they make you do is a waste of time. I have been in the job 20 years and it's getting to the point where it is becoming more trouble that it is worth now. Vossy you can still drive without the training you just cant be paid for it.

Its so people with horse boxes and race transporters can still use them without doing the training. They were going to make hours driving those count towards your working week.

I gave up on lorries , its just not worth the time and money any more with the operators license and all the new ******** when you can do more or less the same loads with a land rover trailer and side step it all . If you passed your test before 96 , anyway.
