As above. I have a 25kg sack of crushed pale malt. So far I have made 3 brews with it, and on each occasion my efficiency has got better. I always weigh the grains I need. But am I getting a higher concentration of husk from the top of the bag? Anyone else noticed a difference as you use a bag? I'm thinking that in transport the lighter parts migrate to the top of the bag as it is vibrated in the truck. Hence more husk. And the heavier bit to the bottom. Hence higher concentration of kernel.

I suppose it depends on which way the bag is loaded for transport, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed it. Maybe I need to factor this in next time I have a bag. Use slightly more at first and slightly less at the end. But then you don't know how it was transported. I'll stop now as my brain is hurting.

all stacked particles will try to sort themselves with any kind of movement if all the particles have equal density the largest appear to rise to the top (its actually the smaller particles falling through the cracks and when so many do the bigger particles are forced upwards.

With mixed Density particles (like a bag of malt) the heavier density particles are pulled down more but grain size is still important as if the lighter density particles are too small theyll still work their way to the bottom.

If you wanted a consistant mix lay the sack flat slit it top to bottom and transfer it carefully as possible to a container taking from different parts of the sack. Once in its container do not move it at all or it will all start sorting again.

A lot of work but I know how precise some people like to be.
