Disgusting scenes in Washington

The Capitol has its own police - 2,000 of them. I'm amazed we didn't see soldiers abseiling down from helicopters. I guess there are escape tunnels which were used to evacuate the VP and other Congressional officers. These could have been used to quickly reinforce the Capitol Police. But with 23 law enforcement agencies in DC alone, it might be hard to organise! I think there was complicity from some in the CP.

It sounds like it's complicated, and there's some debate about the chain of command, different forces being under the control of different people. But one thing is clear is that in the US things happen if the President wants them to, it sounds like the Pentagon and Pence had to go behind Trump's back to get the National Guard out.

It's easy to make the comparison to a few months ago, when people were protesting about police killing black people in the street.

DC has strict laws about civilians and guns which seem to have prevented a bloodbath. Most of the protesters were unarmed. A concealed carry permit in their own state is not valid in DC.

If you're the kind of person who's intent on ransacking the Capitol, then you're probably not going to be too worried about your paperwork - and any response would be on that basis.

Not into the Capitol they weren't - it was an office building across the street. Obviously can't be condoned, but an order of magnitude less of a threat.

I was stocked but not surprised by the scenes of the rioting in Washington today. Trump has fashioned this protest and he will use any means to remain in the White House. He needs to be removed immediately from office and charged with initiating rioting.

It's all fascinating and horrifying at the same time. I hope T is impeached again even though the Senate will acquit - it is still an impeachment and I think he would be the only president ever to have been impeached twice. I don't care if he goes to jail so long as he is disqualified from running in 2024.

He has pardoned so many he will be quite lonely in prison! He will cut a sad figure with a buzz cut and no orange dye for his hair and face. In an orange jump suit he will look like a maggot!

Yes. And the other way 'round. And in places other than the good ol' US of A, which seems to have disporoprtionate amont of discussion about it and its goings-on compared to anywhere else.

I think it (again!) goes down to the media, their desire to make money from news, and various people's proclivities in accepting the various stories. We'd all (or mostly!) I'm sure prefer people to look at actual facts, but it ain't happening, the media os polarised (the "Daily Express" and the "Independent" (sic) for instance are identical but opposite) and things seem to be getting even worse. Gah!

It's neccessary to read reports from various sources, and take an average, generally.

To be honest I have little interest in what goes on in the USA political system as I have said many times if Trump, Clinton and now Biden are the best people they could find to run their country they deserve all they get.

Could you give us a link to one or two of these videos? I had thought that claims of fraud had been thrown out of court because of lack of such evidence.

This is completely untrue. The Senate is 50/50 and the Republicans will sit on many of the committees that prepare legislation. It is a two-party state. By your logic, it must have been a one-party state these last four years!

If there really was fraud then Biden wouldn’t be about to take his seat in the White House. Trump has failed to provide any evidence for any wrongdoing hence the courts throwing his appeals out. Everything else is a crazy QAnon conspiracy theory.

The only video of alleged fraud I’ve seen (someone burning a pile of ballots) was quickly debunked because there were a number of details missing from the slips on the video that would have been on a normal ballot slip and therefore proven to be fake.
