So....

S.G. of water is 1000
I go hunting for elderflowers, can't be any calories in them...
I add 2.5 lbs of sugar, yeast etc etc
Sugar is converted to alcohol
I ferment out to 1000

therefore....no calories, right?

:laugh8:clapa

(Seriously, if someone can explain the maths, I would be interested!)

The alcohol itself contains calories, if you think if you could separate it from the water and put a match to it, it would look pretty damn calorific.

An old school friend who was into bodybuilding told me that alcohol is empty calories and cannot be used it just goes to fat, not how accurate this is.

I also wonder if any of the calories from the alcohol are excreted when the alcohol is broken down and removed from the blood....?

Alcohol has 7 calories per gram, fat has 9, carbs have 4.

The empty calories thing is meaningless - people just use it to mean that you don't get any beneficial nutrients or proteins with it. You know what does the same and gets processed in the same way? Fructose. It has to be processed by the liver in the same way alcohol does. Is eating fruit bad? No, you get fibre with it - is drinking fruit juice bad? It's not great. Yay, I can get all the calories from 20 oranges in one slurp without the fibre, yipee! Oh, and with apples I can get all that methanol goodness and a banging headache!

Fruit seasons are so relatively small we're more designed for vegetables than fruits and fruits have more sucrose. So when the Helmsley sisters tell you to use pure agave syrup instead of refined sugar, agave syrup that's 96% fructose, tell them to STFU. Yeah, they annoy me.

I believe as well consuming large amounts of fructose in the form of high fructose corn syrup is one of the ways it can become harmful. Thankfully we don't have a lot of it here is more in the US

This is all very interesting, particularly about the Fructose - I have noticed it creeping into all sorts of products, and Mr Wynott cannot tolerate it, causes dreadful stomach problems. Really glad to read all this.
