My car was broken into on Saturday (6.30pm, on my drive!) and the (well hidden) satnav was taken. I'm having the glass replaced later today and in the meantime called Tomtom to de-register the unit from my account so the features are limited. The first girl asked for a copy of the Police crime report so I duly called with what I consider a simple request.

This is a brief & cut-down version of the conversation. I can't illustrate the countless times the woman interrupted & overtalked me:

Me: Can I have a copy of the report please?

Lady: No, we can't under Data Protection

Me: But I reported it and it's about me

Lady: Sorry you can't have it, Tomtom will have to email a request for it

Me: But it's about me - who are you protecting the data from?

Lady: Tomtom

Me: But they can ask you for it and you'll give it to them?

Lady: Yes that's right

My incredulity hit an all time high!

you report a crime, a crime report is made, you get the crime number you forward the number to tom tom and request the facitities be disabled etc....

Thanks so much for your advice piddle, but my post was referring to the farcical conversation with the Police rather than the procedure that I need to follow.

(Oh and incidentally (as per my OP) Tomtom asked for a copy of the report - not merely a crime number).

Should have asked to speak to her supervisor

I was on the verge of exploding at that point so I said goodbye, calmed down & called back.........only to be told the same by another person. Although I felt a bit of an anorak I then called the Governments' Information Commission Office to ask them. The answer? The same......

Ever been in one of those situations where you're glad alcohol exists?!

TomTom should only need the crime report number, as soon as a crime report is generated it becomes a restricted document and can't just be sent out unfortunately.

Its a crazy red tape world
