Unfortunately Standing Charges are required to cover the fixed cost element of supplying electricity, such as maintenance of the network.
If that were entirely true, then the cost would be the same over all suppliers. There's plenty of other services that manage to fund their running costs without standing charges.

When the energy price cap rises on Friday, most households will face an increase of at least 80% in the standing charges they pay for electricity, with much of the extra cost a result of the failure of 30 suppliers during 2020.....newspaper article from the Gaurdian. I believe all standing charges now are exactly the same after the price cap

Standing charges are also to compensate big energy companies who took on new customers due to firms collapsing. OFGEM granted the companies the right for US to pay THEM to get costs back. Only the other day British Gas said they made millions more profits due to new customers from failed energy companies. Looks Like the standing charge can be used for profiteering as well.
I understand this point of view, the newspapers perpetuate this. In reality British Gas has certainly not made millions of profits due to customers from failed energy companies. In fact British Gas took on hardly any of those customers, they went to other suppliers. The reason for that is that those customers are loss making, hence why those suppliers went under. Buying the energy for those customers would be very expensive so a supplier wouldn’t want them, hence why there are no takers to buy Bulb, and it is being funded by the general public. Anyway, I understand the cynicism from the regular person, it’s just that those with a bit more knowledge of how the industry works know that what is reported in the papers is not reality.

Indeed, which means there's less incentive for people to be energy efficient when a large chunk of their bill is fixed.
The largest chunk of a bill is still based on the variable rate, so it’s definitely still worth trying to be energy efficient. The standing charge will go up but the unit rate will go up massively too.

Well British Gas got it's 1.6 billion profit in 6 months from some other source then. Am I right in thinking they own Centrica that sells energy back to them at inflated prices?

No one will ever convince me the energy industry is not corrupt and the prices we pay do not reflect the actual cost of supplying the stuff. Even more so with the smaller companies going the big 6 have stitched the market up between them. So much for competition when all prices are about the same and the advice is stick to what you have because there's no cheaper tariff around.

The industry doesn't have to and shouldn't run the way it does. With standing charges, the less energy you use the more you pay overall in total for a unit of energy. Put another way, if you waste energy, you're rewarded by getting it at a cheaper unit rate. The less energy you can afford to use, the more it costs you per unit.

That’s right it’s from other sources, the profit has come mainly from the Production business (production of oil and gas). That has been fantastic this year due to the high energy prices. The customer supply businesses are horrifically poor performing. Yes they make some money but the £ per customer profit is not very high.

If you use less energy you pay less.

Most reasonable people can see that it's grossly unfair on those that are using the bare minimum they can afford, to whom it will be a greater portion of their income. It's a socially, ethically and environmentally broken system that really does take some defending.
Yes system is certainly seems broken when we’re paying potentially £3k-£4k per year in the future. I do worry what some people are going to do this winter.

Just seen that British Gas took 200.000 new customers from failed energy companies

Boiling point of wort is slightly higher than for water.

I have a lid with a 2" wide chimney too. The BK is insulated with Armaflex.
'Slightly', as in under a degree even for strong wort. Not multiple degrees:

Yes sounds about right. That’s a small % of the total number. Why do you think we are all having to pay suppliers a new charge for the cost of taking on these customers? Because they are all loss making.
