I'm doing my own bar for my wedding and investing in some corny kegs. Would you guys advise on new or are 2nd hand ones fine as they are half the price.
Also been looking around for co2 and stumbled across what I think is a cylinder of nitrogen from a pub which is shut down.
Is it useless having the nitrogen?

I don't own any Corny kegs but it's on my long term shopping list and I full intend to buy used ones. As far as I see it there's not much to go wrong with them and nothing that a new set of O rings won't sort.

As for the nitrogen it's really only for dispensing stouts to get the creamy head / small bubbles. You need a different regulator to the normal type for the cylinder. The general consensus is that it's not worth the hassle and plain old CO2 is much more versatile.
 
Shipyard has a different mouthfeel, wonder if they use nitrogen for that on tap.

It may be quite good though for my milkshake IPA

have 3 of them all second hand and as long as they are refurbished ie had all the poppets and o rings replaced shouldn't have any issues,as for that nitrogeon cylinder leave well alone apart from needing CO2 minimum for ales I don't think you will find a gas supplier willing to take a foreign cylinder in exchange for one of his own

You can get the used corny kegs you just have to pressure test them to make sure that the hold if they do not hold pressure then you'll need to replace the O-rings in the gasket on the lid too easy.

I would look closely at that nitrogen cylinder because Beer gas used for serving nitro beers is not 100% nitrogen it's a mix that's why they call it beer gas it's like 80% nitrogen 20% CO2

My experience as nitrogen served beers are only good with stouts and porters it really brings out the roast and gives more of a creamy mouthfeel but with IPA's I think it really takes away from the purpose of having an IPA and reduces the impact of hops

First thing to do is find a source for gas, whether it be plain Co2 or proper pub gas cylinders for kegged beers, whatever gas you can easily source will point you towards the right regulator type to look for.

Depending on how many beer drinkers you expect to have will also give you a ballpark idea of how much beer you need to have kegged and how much by way of gas bottles and some form of management for them to be in place, with force carbing, setup, testing flow balance, cleaning lines etc i would guestimate around 8-10 full cornies for a regular pub sized (6kg) gas bottle, this would be a bit higher in a properly setup cellar where you are just hooking up pre carbed kegs and all pipe has been sized out and tested.

Not the cheapest s/h but they were 'as new' condition with the seals replaced.

I have also bought some cheap secondhand ones (not from the above seller) and ended up spending out on a full set of seals and they still don't seal as well at low pressure.

Also normannumpa is a good source of parts on ebay
