Hey,

Ive had mine in the FV (i know this stands for fermenter, but why FV?? anyways..) for 15 days now. My OG was 1.045 brewed to 20 liters, with 1kg of dark spraymalt. It has now been at 1.015 for two days. Safe too bottle? It has been standing on around 19-20C the whole time.

Cheers - Ray

PS: The taste of the hydrometer readings are very promising
Personally id want it to go down to 1010 or 1012 even, but take a couple of readings a day apart and see if its finished fermenting or still droping, but your shout mate if you think its finished.

Mine have been carbonating for two weeks now, so was moving them to my new conditioning fridge, when oopsy, one of the bottles accidentally opened and poured itself into a glass!

Well, I was jut forced to drink it and, oh, my, goodness. It's fantastic :drink:

This is going to be so nice once it's actually conditioned for a few weeks, so long as I can wait that long :wha:

I wasn't going to bother labelling these as they are all in grolsch bottles, but thought I'd make them look a bit nicer. Label is loosely based on the kit.

I got the grolsch bottles from a forum member who was having a clear out. You have to keep them in the dark, as they are green glass, but most home brew shops sell amber ones. If you have a "the range" near you, they sell amber flip tops pretty cheap.

For the brew, I'd recommend at least 500g of dark spray malt, 1kg is even better though, although beer enhancer is okay and far better than plain sugar.

How much brewing sugar would you guys recommend to put in the FV? i do like a strong pint, and how much priming sugar would anyone recommend to put in the 40 pint plastic keg?

thanks guys :thumb:

From memory, the kit instructions call for 1kg of sugar. Sugar adds alcohol, whereas malt extract adds both alcohol and body (mouth feel and flavour). Beer kit enhancer is basically half sugar, half malt extract, so at the least, I'd personally suggest using 1 to 1.2kg of brew kit enhancer.

For a better pint, add at least 1kg of malt extract, I use extra dark. You can also use the cans of liquid malt extract, but use the unhopped ones.

I also add a small tin of black treacle, which is only about 75 per cent fermentable, so adds roughly 250 to 300g of sugar, but also adds flavour.

For priming bottles, use 1/2 teaspoon per bottle, or if batch priming, 2 to 3g per pint. For a keg, about 80g sugar should be a good amount, for the full 40 pints.

I also brew mine a little short (21 litres), which increases ABV and body. I achieved 6.6 per cent, before carbonation, using 1kg extra dark DME, a tin of treacle and a 21 litre brew. I believe carbonation adds another 0.5 per cent ABV

As a general rule, allow 2 weeks to carbonate, then a minimum of 2 weeks to condition. Some people recommend a week's conditioning for every 10 points of gravity, so 5 to 6 weeks for this particular kit, if you can wait that long!

Don't worry, it will be drinkable in 2 weeks, it will just get better if you can leave it

I've done with treacle and without, but find the treacle too overpowering. I might do a honey stout next time though :)

Thanks Sloe, great info, much appreciated :thumb:

Can you describe what kind of flavour the black treacle adds?

I have stout drinking uncles and pals who are always at me to brew some. Going to go with the Coopers kit, 500g Dark spraymalt, black treacle and maybe some dark brown sugar. Was also going to add some cocoa powder at bottling but I'm not sure I should risk it since these guys are traditional stout men.

Thanks
