Bottled mine today - I might have to go to the pub to avoid the urge to unbottle one or five of them tonight!

The sample I had while bottling was incredible and the smokey caramel undertones were amazing. I've tasted fully conditioned commercial stouts that were nowhere near this good!

Cheers! :drink:  :drink:

Hi BerkshireBadger,

What did you use to prime the bottles? I normally use Coopers carbonation drops for my bitters and ales but I've heard people recommended dark sugar for stout?

Bit disappointed that mine didn't do the monkey brain thing like everyone else's seemed to :sulk:

In fact, mine was very slow to start as my bottles of water which had been stored in the shed took the temp right down to around 16C, so even though I activated my yeast, it was probably sulking a bit. Once it got going, airlock activity wasn't spectacular, although it did produce a big 6-inch or so froth for about half a day. Air lock stopped bubbling after a day or so, but gravity is down to 1.014 now after a week (started at 1.060). Going to leave it for another week before bottling to see if it drops any further, although not expecting much change.

Pretty surprised by the lack of airlock activity, actually, as my Admiral's reserve bubbled for 10 days before stopping, but perhaps this FV has a less airtight lid...

Sounds like its going great. Its on track i'd say, and give it another week should be more than enough, maybe 3 days is enough, if it gets around 1010 ish :thumb:

I tend to start my brews on a weekend, so that I can give them 2-3 weeks and then have a clear day to bottle them, so this won't get bottled till next Saturday at the earliest, which will give it plenty of time to drop that last little bit to 1.010, which should give me a rather healthy 6.7% abv :drink:

Mine had a very sedate fermentation. Plenty of krausen but not a single bubble came through the airlock - I thought it might've gone wrong until I checked and got a 1.009 FG.

It's had a week in the bottles now - really struggling not to drink a bottle or three... :?

Sloebrewer, have you tried your stout yet? I like your idea of 1kg og dme & 1 tin of black treacle. With a sg og 1060, that should be a good pint!!

Hi Hong. I hadn't, as I tend to leave my brews in the FV for 2 weeks. I've just checked the SG and it's not moved from 1.014, after 3 days, so probably ready to bottle. However, I still plan to bottle it on Saturday.

Just for you and in the name of science, I have just drunk the contents of the trial jar. It's lovely. Slightly smokey tasting, a little bitterness, hints of coffee but balanced by sweetness.

Considering it's still sitting on the yeast cake, it's gorgeous - I reckon this is going to be a right little cracker once it's conditioned. Question is, can I wait 4 weeks? :wha:

Pound for pound, surely this is the best kit on the market?

By the way Te$co have it reduced to £9.70 again.

But free delivery to store.
Not just the supermarkets either, my delivery is coming tomorrow (I only ordered it today at 2pm,) to the local tesco express.
Brill!! :thumb:

Just ordered two stout kits from tesco online for £19.54.
That will be next in the bucket i think.
I'm planning to use 1kg Brew enhancer and 454g Black treacle.
Any other ideas?

I would recommend dark or extra dark DME rather than the BKE - might be a couple of quid more but worth it for the extra malty goodness
