Hi,

Just got a coopers lager on the go...

Just wondered if anyone has tried this one...and any tips or is it an easy one?

Thanks

I will be bottling my coopers lager tomorrow one tip would be to start your yeast fermenting in a pint of warm water before you add it to your fv. I did this last week and found fermentation was alot better than just sprinkling the dried yeast on top of the brew. Usually i wrap my lager in bubble wrap as lager does  nt need to be too warm. A day later fermentation was very good with a good head of foamy yeast in the fv.

Great, thanks.

I am planning on bottling instead of kegging....I am going to use Magners bottles, what are you using as I have heard scary stories of exploding bottles..also, how much sugar are you using at bottling stage, do you individually prime each bottle or do in one big hit?

Any advice would be useful as only my 2nd brew...first in bottles waiting to be tsted next week.

Thanks,
Dave

tove,
the Magners bottles will be fine as they are nice and thick. There is a 'Brew FAQ' on the priming of bottles but in summary, I'd add 1/2 to 1 tsp of sugar per bottle depending on how much carbonation you like (and I tend to add the sugar to each bottle unless the kit instructions call for a 2nd fermentation in a fresh fv with the job lot of sugar).

I use old coke bottles 3.5 teaspoons of sugar per bottle

I hope you mean the 2 liter bottles, not the 500ml bottles of coke

I've done the Aussie Lager a couple of times. Nice basic Lager, easy to drink.

It's worth having a couple of 500ml coke bottles with your lager in, so you can check on the pressure.

Magner's bottles are great, perfect size! I prime each bottle with half teaspoon white sugar, as I don't have a second FV, and don't fancy stirring it in and risking disturbing yeast.

Only had one exploding bottle from 6 or 7 kits worth. Luckily it was in the shed in a bottle crate with an old bedsheet over the top so minimal mess. It's worth keeping it out of the way, in a plastic container, with something over the top.

Thanks to all replies..

Love this site...so many people with good advice..

Cheers Guys!!

I bottled my coopers lager last sunday just checked bottles today the beer seems to be lifeless no bubbles etc. Will taste in a week or so see if it tastes better than it looks :D

Just to reitterate what others have said, 1/2 teaspoon to each pint or 1/2 litre bottle is a good guide and will give a nice bit of carbonation after a couple of weeks if you, like me, struggle to sit and watch beer for much longer without opening one or two, just to check...
