Hi All,
Just a quick question, I have quite a few brews (ales, turbos and wines) in my shed now sitting there maturing. It's in the shade for most of the day but catches the sun late pm / early eve and was 25c in there at 6pm today. My question is will the fluctuations in temperature at this time of year have any adverse effects on the maturing bottles in there? Thanks.

That's a tad warm mate. Certainly for beers to clear, two weeks cold is good. A tray of water to stand your bottles in (changed regularly) might help?

Thanks, I was afraid of that! Been ok until today but really warmed up and the sun gradually coming round more although it only catches the shed for an hour or so. Got too many to stand in water and temp same indoors.

Brew fridge it is then! Quite a few folk stop brewing over the summer for this very reason....

Yes I remember reading about that now you mention it. Learning all the time and fantastic hobby, cheers!

I reckon as long as you had the first 2-3 at a constant secondary fermentation temperature, and all the priming sugar has fermented out, I don't think the temperature you are looking at as a max in your shed is going to do any great harm (...that might not be the case if still fermenting).

I think you will just get slightly better (noticeable difference?) conditioned beer at a constant lower temperature. I stick mine in the darkest corner of the garage which is never above 20*C even on the warmest summer days. When stocks in the beer fridge run low I stick some from my garage supply in and drink lagers straight from fridge and take ales out 30 mins before drinking.

I think the brickwork of the garage is a better insulator from heat than thinner shed walls (typically wood or tin).

Are there any threads on here i should be reading regarding making a beer fridge? My garage is also too warm this time of year and the beer isn't really drinkable unless chilled.
Plenty. Search stc1000, or fermentation fridge. Pm me if you want details on how I did mine...

Hi Replay

I had this same issue. My shed has windows on one side and I noticed a few days where temps were getting very high recently.

What I did was put the bottles in a sturdy storage box (open topped) and put them behind my shed where it is always shady so much cooler. I then covered the 2 boxes with a tarp to (hopefully) stop rain getting in and giving me rusty bottle tops.

So far so good.
