It must be something to do with the weather!
Tomorrows brewday was going to be a nice summery Cali Common but whilst browsing around I found an extract recipe for a coconut porter. Sounds perfect for a winters evening, Bounty bar in a glass!
I will do an all grain and have nearly all the malts for a Greg Hughes brown porter, just need to sub brown malt for biscuit malt (sounds nicer to me).
The extract recipe added 250g of toasted dessicated coconut in the FV after 3 days.
Any advice on adding coconut? Can it be added to the boil too, then dry "hop" with it in the FV?

I have been thinking about this
myself, but there are a few threads on here where it had been done before and there are reports that coconut causes lack of head retention. Also it appears that much like hoppy Beers, the coconut taste diminishes over time. Try a search for those threads.

Yeah I did a search and read about those issues.
But head retention and longevity of the stash is not a problem with the speed I drink! 😂

Head retention was my problem, I baked the dessicated coconut and tried to dab off the oil before adding to the fv, it didnt work. Contrary to what others have said though, it still tastes very coconutty quite a long time since brewing. I wonder if a load of wheat would help with head retention.

Well chocolate, coffee, honey, plum etc are common additions to a porter.
So why not? 😁
Given the amount of porters I have gone through, and I am no porter guru. I'd say the only one of those that has any real effectiveness is the plum one. The rest of them seem rather benign and you can either barely taste em or they end up being /puke. But like I say, it is your choice and I'd be interested to read your results. I am currently drinking a porter rn and imo the coconut would be barely notable to even taste and end up being benign. Good luck to yer though =)

Tried the coconut Porter at Burning Soul microbrewery in Brum at the weekend and it was very good indeed. it had just a bit more than a hint of coconut not at all overpowering, coupled with a little lower bittering than you’d expect it worked really well.
Joking apart adding a double Malibu or two to instead of toasted coconut might just get you there, no head retention issue either. I’d leave out the pineapple though.
