Hi guys n gals, I'm not new to this hobby having brewed a few beer kits n wine from kits and the Wow style. But I'm really keen to get started with kegging with a corny keg/kegerator set up. My problem is where do I get a co2 cylinder from? Can I buy one or do I have to rent? I guess what I'm asking is what do you guys do? Thanks for any advice...

There are a few options, but i think the best is pay a deposit on the bottle then just pay for your refils.You can pay a monthly rental on the bottle as another option.

Hi Dmac. I am new to homebrewing. My first kit (Muntons Docklands Porter) is bubbling away nicely and I'm waiting delivery of a corny keg set up kit from BewKegTap. If you havent ordered one or need any help I can recommend speaking to them - they are really helpful. Like you, I am interested to know what most folk do re CO2 cylinders.

I use a local gas supplier, I paid a deposit and then just pay for a refill when needed. Prices seem to be a bit of a lottery depending where abouts in the country you are
Thanks guys, brilliant to have this resource, of like minded peeps, some learning as we go n some greatly experienced n knowledgeable. I had a shock earlier today cos I was quoted £165 a year for daily rental, refills etc n I thought that was over the top. I will explore the rental of a bottle again, but I'm guessing the suppliers have come to realise that the homebrew market has turned into a good avenue for profit due to the pandemic...

For a 6.35kg bottle I think i paid £60 deposit and about £20/25.
You might be able to find it cheaper local to you.
I have to rent my gas bottles from boc for lead welding, it works out a lot more than deposit for my home brew co2

Where do you live mate?
Search 'cellar gas' and your area and you'll find someone. My nearest place is an hour away sadly, unless I go with the pub supply guys but they want a monthly rent.
Where I go charges £100 for the 6kg canister and £10 a refill. After 10 years I'll have to pay to get the bottle checked or something, but not much. Discovered recently that they will fill fire extinguishers, which would have been a lot less than £100 - but too late now!

In Essex I use a friendly fire extinguisher company who do gas refills and are extremely helpful if you happen to have cash

Ah crikey there's one that delivers around here (Berkshire) that's reasonable priced and no silly deposit.I'm in not so sunny Plymouth mate
I've texted my mate for the name.
I just get mine from the local pub.. I'm still on my first bottle and the landlord won't take any money from me

When I lived in Cornwall I picked up a cylinder from J Gas Supplies in Perranporth. About £80 deposit and £10 refill- HOME | J Gas SuppliesI'm in not so sunny Plymouth mate

Sadly not to many pubs open atm, I got a 6.35kg last summer, have been flushing kegs weekly and carbing, not even hit the red yet.
I use Southampton Calor Gas centre, from memory it's about £60 deposit on the 6kg cylinder and refils are just over £20. Whilst they offer a good service it's always a bit of a Spanish Inquisition to assure them that I have one of their cylinders, never quite figured out why. They presumably act as retailer for a CO2 supplier who only refils their own cylinders.
A neighbour gave me an empty 6kg cylinder which had fallen into his hands along the way for welding. I found that I could not get it refilled nor could I dispose of it at the local dump. I would have had to go to a specialist disposal company at some enormous cost. So beware of such gifts!

So, do you guys go for a pure Co2 cylinder. I've seen on the BOC website that they do a 'Suremix' so for instance they do a 30% Co2/70% nitrogen mix which they recommend for dispensing stouts and ales. 
I go for pure co2 but that works well with what I drink.

You are correct, they have different fittings and the nitrogen regulator also needs to handle the higher pressure.
