Hello there! First time poster, long time wanting to try it out!

I've just started my first batch of turbo cider (I plan to let it settle a bit though so it's a bit less turbo-like).

I've taken my starting gravity, but it's been a couple of days and the froth has subsided. If I add my last 1/2 lire of juice now, wont that affect what the starting gravity would have been if I had originally put it all in at once (I added some sugar to the mix)? How do I work out what it would have been at, or would the difference be negligible?

This was a 1 gallon batch - 4 1/2 litres now, and 1/2 waiting to go in. It only frothed a little bit (about 1cm for a day). is this normal?

Cheers

i would think it would be negligible, your abv at the end will be a little off, but i dont think it should be that far out.. there will prob be a poster here that could tell you exactly how much itll affect your sg, im not that experienced myself :)

Thanks alchomist.

I've also edited the original post to state I did a 1 gallon batch.

no problem, and the frothing is just the result of the yeast working hard :)

Moved.

With these simple turbocider type brews I never bother with the hydrometer.
I look at the packs, work out my total sugar, and use the 20g/litre=1% rule-of-thumb.
Only works if you ferment out to totally dry, but that's the si,plest way anyhow - use artificial sweetener if you don't want dry.

Actually I don't even do that anymore - I know that with standard AJ I'm going to get around 5%, which is fine, or with my recipe including concentrate I'll get 6.5%, also fine.

Amazing thanks oldbloke.

Just a quicky, rather than starting a new thread - most TC posts I've seen, the liquid in the FV has a lot of froth for a couple of days and bubbles once a second. Mine's been going 48 hours, yet there was only a bit of froth, and it' was gone after 24 hours. Also its only bubbling once every 5 - 10 seconds. Is this anything to worry about? I'm not using the standard airlock, one of these 'handy' ones. My thought is that they are bigger, thus it takes more time for air to collect and bubble. Is this right?

These types of airlock....

Lots of variables - different AJs, different other ingredients, different yeasts, temperatures... Plus simple stuff like, is the bung rammed in nice'n'tight? Maybe those locks do go a bit slower though, I dunno.

As long as it's clearly working (and it is), don't worry about it.

I've learnt the hard way to leave topping up to day 5 even if all the frothy stuff is long gone. Tried to get away doing it halfway into day 4 in my most recent, and it climbed out of the lock... The sort you have would be easier to clean when that happens, think next time I need some I'll go for those.

sorry to jump in, Oldbloke, tesco are selling them in a pack of two with bungs included! :D

-edit-
plus these ones are much quieter than the ones with the little bubble on the stems, theres no blurb noises, bonus! :P

Well, I have quite a few now, and they rarely need replacing, so....

anyway I rather enjoy the blurp blurp noises
