Tap water shouldn't need boiling, it's treated to kill all the bugs... with chlorine. Unless you're on an unusual supply maybe, but isn't all UK mains water treated?
But the boiling is done by HebridesRob, on The Isle of Harris, so it might be a necessity for him (don't know much about the water supply for there)?
 
I was in the Peak District last week and the water tasted like it came straight from a bottle of Evian! Tasting the water back in Ipswich isn't bad but there was a massive difference.

Since I first started brewing I bought all sorts of chemicals and read loads of stuff and still think my brews taste better when it's kept simple and not being so OCD about everything. I'll take some tap water, pop in a crushed campden and use that for the mash/boil etc.
