Sorry for the delay. I checked and it was Silver Spoon and the price was actually £1.34 for a 2KG bag.
Off to see if it's still on offer.

I buy my sugar in Asda it is always 1.34 for 2kg, but if you haven't got Asda then that offer is good.

Random question on the sugar subject! I am quite new to brewing and have been buying the brewing sugar from my LHBS for any wines I have made so far, it's quite expensive at £2.29 per 1kg bag!! Am I wasting my money for what I am led to believe is a 'cleaner' sugar and should I just stick with the old granulated from the supermarket in future?

Normal household sugar (sucrose), when fermenting is first 'split' by the yeast into Glucose and Fructose. The Glucose, being the main constituent of grape juice, is the first component to be fermented so glucose allows the yeast to get to work straight away without wasting energy seperating from Fructose. Brewing sugar is just glucose powder i think so it just saves time. For beer making most people suggest using it, for wine making not many people use it. Personally I wouldnt use it for wine as the price is ridiculous.

Yes, in my opinion you're wasting your money, for the vast majority of winemaking just stick to regular white granulated sugar. Occasionally it's nicer to use demerara or other brown sugars, golden syrup or honey but I would absolutely never use brewing sugar.

HLA: The yeasties don't waste any energy splitting the sucrose, they just do it automatically.

cheers folks, I shall get down to tesco for my sugar in future :) seem to be spending more money on the brewing sugar than anything else at the mo so gonna save myself some pennies :)

Morrisons are also selling 2kg bags of white granulated sugar for one pound thirty-something pence. Not sure if this is a short-term offer, or their regular price, but I grabbed a few just in case...

It does seem to be an ongoing price, eighty-something for 1kg but £1.34 for 2kg (67p/kg).

I bought another half dozen bags at that price last weekend, like you said, just in case.

@Moley - I didn't write that :D constituent of grape juice, that's too posh language for me.
I should of removed it though as you have told me before and for once I forgot something you told me. Toodle pip old bean :thumb:

Well I didn't like to say that the middle bit sounded like total cobblers to me, so if you copied and pasted I'd be interested to know your source.

Sucrose gets split into glucose and fructose - agreed :thumb:

Comment requested from Aleman or anyone else who knows more than me about sugar types and how yeasties operate, but I would have thought the main sugar in grape juice would be fructose?

Glucose and fructose have the same chemical formulae, 6 carbons, 12 hydrogens and 6 oxygens, they are just put together slightly differently. Until I am told otherwise I don't see why 8 out of 10 yeasties would express any preference.

Hi guy's.
I posted it up as although I used to be able to get sugar for 50p a bag, that source dried up and both Sainsburys and Tesco were charging a quid a bag.
I didn't know about the long term Asda deal so seeing the white stuff at 62p a kilo prompted the post.

BTW Moley, tracked down the cheap grape juice at Aldi but I have my suspicions that you were in some time before me on my first visit. Lots of red, no white......

£1.27 for 2K in my local Tesco just now, off to stock up tomorrow as I've used all the sugar in the house putting more brews on today!! Other half not gonna be too happy there's no sugar for his tea when he gets in from work in the morning!!

mySupermarket.co.uk shows Tesco selling "Tate & Lyle Fairtrade Granulated Sugar (15x1Kg)" for only £7.50 - valid until 29/08/2011.

http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/tesc...d_Lyle_Fairtrade_Granulated_Sugar_15x1Kg.html

The only problem I have is that I haven't been able to find that offer at ANY of my local Tescos - and there are 3 within 10 minutes drive from my house!

Has anyone else found this offer?

I'm dropping Tesco an email to find out more...

My local Tescos do Silver Spoon 2kg bags for £1.20, it's only 10p more per bag compared to that offer.

If you have a QD store near you i've been told the sugar there is ridiculously cheap. I'm going to investigate tomorrow i'll let you know the price
