What percentage would you recommend to take out of a batch to "caramelise", in order to give a toffee flavour without being overpowering?

I have used 2l of the very high gravity first runnings from the mash tun with good results :thumb:
 
Yes just put it in a large saucepan on the stove and reduce it down :thumb:
I reduced 2 litres to about 750ml iirc :wha:

I also have been thinking about doing this - to add flavour and colour, would be good to hear peoples results as i always forget to give it a go during a brewday! I`m planning a New Empire IPA (pale malt, buckets and buckets and more buckets of american hops) will be going for around 5 to 6% and thought a wort reduction may work well with this :)
