Can you lift a full FV by the handle?

  • Duh, that's why it has a handle

  • Only if you fancy cleaning up 23l of wort from the kitchen floor

Ever since someone asked how to use a thermometer the other day, I don't mind asking such a basic question.

Is that flimsy bit of wire coat-hanger they call a handle on an FV supposed to support the full weight?

I should have made this a poll really. Question: Can I lift a full FV by the handle?

Option 1: Only if you fancy cleaning up 23l of wort from the kitchen floor
Option 2: Duh, that's why it has a handle

Yea, I have two Young's 25 litre buckets, never had an issue. I have one I fell on when it was empty and it's split at the very top where the handle connects. I use it to fill my fish tank and I'm still able to lift it by the handle when full.

Changed it for you. I'm not sure about your Fv's but my Youngs type with plastic handles can be picked up no problem.

+1

Up and down stairs no problem! Remember though that the lid isn't water tight.

Usually I don't use the handle on any of the fv's but since my op and not being able to use my right arm. I've had to use the handle and its been fine.

Thanks. I have FVs from Ritchie's and Wilko and have picked up both but always been nervous about it. But that's just me...

The person who asked this had obviously not watched "Mrs Browns Boys"

Yeah the handle is fine, it would not be fit for purpose is it didn't hold the weight.

I have a couple of 33L buckets and they are fine with the handle too.

Only problem is carrying them up the loft ladder for crash folio g and conditioning - the 2 handled 25l wine fermenters are a lot harder to lug up as they are just plain awkward.

i lift with handles but still dont trust them fully so only lift a couple of inches from the floor :thumb:

You need a winch :)

Standard one handle bucket is fine as it hangs to the side - the pain is the 2 handled fermenter, I don't trust carrying it by a single handle. A winch would be good but a large shed would be better :D Don't think Santa will be that generous though.

ever thought of moving it up in a hose?
i had to consider 25l plastic jerrycans as fermentors when i built a slightly too small brewfridge, awkward to drain completely when rinsing, but easily lumped about.

I can't think of any other way of lifting the fv other than by the handle

i have 1 from bigger jugs and one from Ritchie's. both have been ok with the handle but i dont use them for the reason of **** happens and i dont want to clean up a 23L spill

Yep, just because you can doesn't mean you should! (and bend your knees before lifting)!
