Can we be a little more accepting of our differences?

I don't read all the threads and I haven't been around as some of the old boys and girls, but from the short time I've been on the forum, I have to say I don't recognise what the OP is saying. I don't recall reading about other brewer's methods being rubbished. When a newbie asks for advice, we give the best advice we can: all in one brewers give their advice, three-vessel brewers give their side of the story as do the BIAB lads and lasses chip in their advice. this will lead to conflicting suggestions on a thread and the newbie has to weigh up the pros and cons and decide which way to go. I've seen a lot of arguments against bottling in PETs recently, but no one has been rubbished for doing so. I haven't come across anyone saying buying a Brewzilla is a waste of money either- although it may be in a thread I haven't read.
Nope, I don't get it. And while we're at it, don't buy a bread machine to make your dough, get your sleeves rolled up, my lad, and get stuck in there up to the armpits. Is that rubbishing bread machines and their owners?
LOL great comment, however I fall into the trap of using a bread machine and have done so for 30 years. However I know how to do it from scratch and sometimes do, depending on which works best. I wouldn't use the BM for naan breads for example but it does make great loaves and also lovely French sticks. And pizza bases too. I think it depends on the machine: like wine kits, those which require amounts of sugar which you might raise an eyebrow at are the ones to avoid!

The trouble with posting on a forum is that it's easy to misread someone's tone.
Equally your own comments can be perceived the wrong way.
I ignored what I took to be a slightly sarky comment recently ( yes I chill my Proper Job 😄 )
just thinking to myself 'what a knobhead'.
The good advice and community spirit far outweighs any spikiness you may encounter in my view.
Quite so: the written word cannot convey the expressions or tone of a face to face conversation and some may well mis-construe.

Good point on "growing a thicker skin". Nowadays it's the thing to become upset or offended even if it's on someone else's behalf over the slightest thing. I taught my boys to deal with taunts and name calling etc from a very early age...for anything else they went to MMA classes. My mate calls them the Driscol twins! One's tall,One's short.

My experience on HBF is that the negatives pointed out in the OP don't even apply to the vast majority of posters here. Blips in manners and being considerate are so few and far between, it's not worth mentioning and those are always patched up by the next post or two between the two posters.
That leaves the very few who would gain from being told that it's a good idea to have manners and be considerate but those are the ones that won't change no matter what is said. Basically, including everyone in a "How To" message doesn't work.

Problems, if they arise, should be handled by the two posters, between the two posters, in most cases.
Next step if there's an issue is PMing an Administrator.
Next is using the "Ignore" option.
This will keep your experience here pleasant without a fuss.

I had to google 'tilt hydrometer'....'OW MUCH? as my sainted Sheffield grandmother would have said.
Haha so did I, and you admitting that has given me the courage to out my ignorance!
In the spirit of this thread's title ("can-we-be-a-little-more-accepting-of-our-differences"):

Yeah, winding up "rich kids" who have Tilt hydrometers is a good sport. But remember there are people who cannot read classic hydrometers (all those parallel lines) - and not because they need glasses (look up "saccadic intrusions" if you need an example, and yes, I'm one of them!) - or hydrometers are far too fragile for slightly "uncoordinated" souls (crikey, I'm one of them too!).

If I want something more trustworthy than my Tilts I'll use a pyknometer. A very cheap tool (but the weighing scales are not so cheap) that makes classic hydrometer accuracy look pathetic.

Maybe putting someone on an 'ignore list' is akin to university students no-platforming speakers who they deem to hold the "wrong" views"?
On the contrary, Magistrate, it's more akin to recognising that they have the right to express their views and that some might like to hear what they've got to say, but it also recognises my right not to turn up to listen to said speaker's "blather" should I choose not to. That's why it's called "ignore". If someone expresses views that we feel ought not to be aired, for whatever reason, we have the option to "report" their post with a view to what you refer to as no-platforming. Can't say I've ever had call to do that.
Let's remember that this is only a beer forum, it's not a meeting of the General l Assembly of the UN and if a member finds another member irritating, it's usually better to ignore them and talk to others rather than end up in a fight. That's what I'd do in a pub, for just the same reasons.

There is also the option to make individual forums invisible so non of the threads/posts appear in the new post list, if any members would like any forums removed from view message me and i will remove them.

Well that is true
One of my most difficoult tasks was to sit on a panel deciding who should stay and who should be for the "chop".
These were men and women with families to support
That has to be one of the most gruesome and downright sh1tty tasks in employment as you know your dealing with someone's life.I couldn't do it.

I am one of the sex drugs rock & roll generation free love and flowers in your hair what a time to be young, i read somewere that Harold Wilson told Tony Ben we were out of control and told him to put a stop to it Tony said you do it i like it, we changed the world, well that should get me on an ignore list :hat::tinhat:

We jolly well did change the world, too. And we let our guard down and taught peace and love to all and so the *******s changed it back again and even worse.
Free love, simple pleasures, a few tokes on the old dooby, vegetarianism, own next to nothing, walk or hitch a lift everywhere,,, none of this satisfies the needs of corporate greed and the Gammon definition of decency.

I'm sure we're on plenty of lists as radical subversives. Public enemy number 1 etc.

Brilliant . . . . . I must watch "Woodstock" again 😵

Have you been listening to Sandi Thom again.

I must say this has been an interesting thread though similar to others of recent years be it with different participants and may I say with more respectful replies which may have drifted off topic for a bit.
I myself got sucked in to a comment which turned out to be about my phone's signature which was ALE 21 and I had taken it the wrong way thinking it was a cheeky reply then realised after I had posted it was actually a tongue in cheek compliment.
Anyway we are individuals who can be told and demonstrated to the death on what is right or wrong but again what is right for one maybe wrong for the other and vice versa.I am a qualified trainer at work and I enjoy passing on tacid knowledge to others as this for one expands their knowledge and capabilities and two means if they have the knowledge to fix it this shall be one job less for me if my shift is shadowing them.I would demonstrate on how to complete certain tasks or issues that may arise but by no means do you need to follow my method as they will have a different approach to suit themselves with the exception of there is no other alternative but again it's each to their own and how they choose going forward,oh and it's amazing to find within minutes of working alongside someone of how things will turn out by just getting their size...

Exactly this. The 'ignore' list isn't affecting someones right to free speech, its exercising ones right not to listen!

The problem with forum ignore lists is on some you still see the persons post but it has a message "You are ignoring this member click here to view the post" which kind of defeats the object if it is reply to one of your posts as the curiosity often gets too much and you view it anyway.

I don't know if this forum does that as i have no one on my ignore list.
