Hi all a little help required i have been biab for a year now 10 brews done a few grain kits and a few of my own design with no real problems so getting too it
I did my hbc pilsner kit 2 weeks ago and after the boil i noticed the eliment was black and was not able to clean off
I fermented the brew for two weeks and just had a taste the brew is deffo burned and i am at a loss why i think it may be because i brewed outside at near freezing any other ideas would be helpful cheers all

Its the sugars in the wort burning onto the element. Its a common thing with electric elements. the only thing that you can do is to keep stirring during the boil.

Cheers just seemed funny that this was the first time i have had it i have brewed a belgian tripple with loads of candy sugar in with no problems

I did about 60 brews using an old Burco and never had burned wort. The element would get black and I scrubbed it with wire wool. Sounds like small particles in the wort to me. I think it's worth straining it to prevent. I use an ace boiler and I have had to scrape the plate with a knife before to clean was so burned but wort was still ok.

This wort was definitely burned there were no particles in the sample it was lovely and clear just smelled and tasted burned i have had a badly stained element before but normally comes clean with a soak in citric acid but this didn't budge just glad i had a new element but decided to use my old one for one more brew

Yeah, my Ace boiler always has a burned layer on the element after every brew but it never affects the taste.
