I have just bought myself a bubbler airlock and having only started to brew in the last few months its my first one.

All this post was to say is that I wish I had one from the beginning, it adds an extra bit of magic to the process as its really reassuring to know that somethings happening.

When I hear the bubble every few seconds it just feels grand...it has also meant that I have resisted the temptation to open the lid of my FV at all as I "know" that something is going on rather that the blind worry of "is it fermenting?!"...(those new to brewing know what I mean!)

So my message to first time or newbie brewers everywhere is...buy a bubbler airlock!

...so long as you don't start panicking when it *doesn't* bubble... or when it stops after 3 days... etc... ;)

+1 for above remember it may be fermenting away but no bubbles in air lock and just because there isnt any bubbles doesnt mean its stopped fermenting ,only hydrometer readings can tell you that :thumb:

Remove bubbler airlock,
cover hole with piece of tape or cotton wool
Hurl bubbler airlock as hard as you can against the nearest wall

if that doesn't fix it, jump up and down on it with size 12 steel toe capped boots

Note this applies to all airlocks used when brewing BEER

I like useing one, it gives me an indication that the brew is going.
I have a new FV and get a good seal around the lid, if the seal was suspect i would just tape it up!
I know you can tell if it's fermenting by using the hydrometer but to do that you need to remove the lid to some degree and could alow in a nasty.

or you could keep ahold of it and use it with a DJ.....

A friend of mine took the term ' air lock' too literally and assumed it should only have air in it and not any water.

Needless to say vinegar fly got in the cider.

Cheers
