Is anyone else feeling the cold tonight?

my rule is no heating until at least 1st November.. (my wines are still happy though)

hubby on nights so will have to freeze getting into bed too

Its the wind thats annoying me more than anything where I am!

Apparently its raining pretty badly up Sunderland aswell and I have been told by a few sources there is a fair chance of it snowing! :wha:

Costco do some lovely snugglie fleece PJs, which at around £14 are a great investment and my dogs soon get on the bed for a cuddle if it is cold ;) But then I was in shorts and tee shirt on the beach running in and out the sea with the dogs on Sunday :D

ok screamlead.. no need to rub it in!!!

it was really windy down here too.. although my garden looks like Steptoes yard where toys etc have been blown about!

Its our 3rd year with a wood burning stove and to date we are getting our fuel on the barter system mainly using Wurzels and scavenging. The 2 reasons we got one are that we dont like the idea that someone in Russia or Norway can turn off the tap and our supply would go and the other is the thieving criminals in whitehall never do a thing to help the working classes of this country, its a great feeling when having a vat free cup of tea or a stove top stew, Dave NE

Wish I had one I produce a fair amount of wood at work (I am a picture framer) However I give it to a pig farmer who comes around collecting. He also takes my spent malt as well.

This year is the 1st year in the last 4 that I have a house with proper central heating

Im looking forward to being warm this winter, but Im still being stubborn with putting it on, not till November I say

It does feel the right weather for snow today though

We have wood burners here no central heating at all. My water is solar panels and is always hot only had to use immersion heater 3 times in 7 years so far.
We also have two sorba's - wood/coal burners and a bag of coal works out at about 3 quid and will last for 6 days. They burn incredibly hot and keep the whole villa toastie.
We used to buy oak and pine to burn but it went up from 100 quid a ton to almost 200 last year so used coal instead which actually worked out cheaper - we use 10 bags a month through winter and usualy bin the burners end of feb or so unless we get a cold snap. I aslo have wood burners if needed for extra heat in other rooms too - one is on roof for BBQ's lol.

Be careful Wendy, some of the cheeper stoves are rubbish and will use wood like its going out of fashion, the Green living forum has a section on wood burners and they give good advice, my stove was just short of £700 and £300 for fitting etc but i will still get my money back within the next 2 years or so, if you have to buy wood its one of the dearest options available, see also my pallet wrecking bar Mk 2 on youtube, cheers Dave NE

Wood isn't cheap and i know that a lot of joinery business are now charging for you to take away their scrap wood. Demand will outstrip supply and you may be left with an expensive heating system. Pallets are a pain in the a*rse to break up. I only have to leave scrap wood out for a few hours and it is gone.

At least we won't need to worry about keeping our fermentation temp down

Normal weather here in the north isles...Tonight's forecast.
A wild night with gale or severe gale northwesterly winds carrying further showers across the Northern Isles, some heavy with hail and thunder. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

I'm off to buy a big bag of rock salt tomorrow. They don't grit our road and my garage access is a 1 in 4 slope.
