Britta Filters

Our tap water has quite a bit of chlorine in it so I have been brewing with bottled water for a while. We recently bought a Britta filter because the cost (and plastic) was mounting up. So the question is could I use this filtered water for brewing or shall I continue with the bottled?

That depends on what sort of filter it is. If it's an activated charcoal filter (for chlorine removal) then it's perfectly fine to use, if it's an ion exchange filter (for softening water) then definitely don't use it. I think most Britta filters are a combination of both.

If you're worried about plastic from bottled water then why not use Campden tablets for chlorine removal from your tap water? Simple and effective.

Thanks! Yeah I've considered the Campden tabs, it's more a question of laziness really, bottled water is so easy to come by.

It's the easiest thing in the world. Next time you order brewing ingredients get some Campden tablets, they're only a few quid for 100 which will last 200 brews. On brew day add half of a crushed tablet to your brewing water, give it a stir and job done.

Much easier than buying bottle water, pouring it in the the boiler and then disposing of the containers, and much cheaper.

Does your water have chlorine or chlorimine?
If chlorine all you need to do is put what you need to brew with in an open container and the chlorine will outgas overnight.

I think it has both if I remember correctly

It’s unlikely but check your local water company. Most do not add it over here I believe.

Quick question about Campden tabs. My brew supplier doesn't sell the tablets just in powder form, how much does each tablet have of potassium metabisulphate ?

One tablet is about 0.5g.
