about a month or 2 ago I made an oatmeal stout, but the oats caused the mash to get stuck. I have a HERMS and there was a lot of air in the system which was impossible to purge. Whenever I tried, I just got more air or no wort running through the pump.

This of course led to the mash temp changing quite a lot over the course of the mash and the final product is quite watery and thin, not at all what an oatmeal stout should be like.

Does anyone have advice for the next time I use oats on how to make them not ruin the mash? I was using 10% of the grain bill.

I do BIAB only, so guessing here - perhaps put the oats in a [big enough] grain bag and merge them in the mash...?
Some people also recommend using rice hulls when using a lot of wheat to avoid a stuck mash.
Never used the hulls, just thinking there's no reason why the bag wouldn't work.. it's only 5-600grams or so of oats, no?
