Hi All
Have been playing around with Beer Engine, but noticed alot of you use Beersmith and there are quite a few more in your many opinions which is the best for designing your own recipes? :wha: :hmm:

I've never used Beer Engine so can't comment really other than to say that I love BeerSmith, nice and straightforward - everything is pretty much where I want it (even if it did almost give me a heart attack a couple of days ago!)

Cost $20 though (after a 2 week free trial), isn't Beer Engine free?

Tony
Yes Beer engine is free but is not really finished, some of the calculations are incomplete and for $20 you can't complain really. the other one is promash but haven't heard much about that one, I know both have free trials but was hoping to get other opinions first otherwise it could take months to evaluate both of them, saw your problem earlier I had a similar one with a virus (from a LHBS website last week.) Have now bought a hard drive and backed up (after £40 fee from a PC doctor to get rid of the virus).

Cheers

From a LHBS website?

That's awful, are the owners aware of it? Mods: is it acceptable to post which one here so we can avoid it?

My issue was largely related to Vista though ... and sorted now!

I looked at promash and that was as far as I got... looked way too complicated although I can see how it would suit a commercial set-up. I love BeerSmith to be honest!

Don't know if I can mention it to be honest, but yes the owner does know in fact he is probably still deaf in one ear. Hope fully the moderators will let me know if I can name & shame.
Thought Beersmith would be the way forward, thanks

I use beer smith - chuffed with it. As far as I am aware it is the only software that is still currently being developed and updated.

I have dabbled with various recipe calculators just for the hell of it, but have found that my own notes of previous brews are far more helpful.
I must admit, that if you have little or no brewing history, these progs must be a godsend. :thumb:

I'm a promash user . . .but am looking for something a bit modern as it is written for windows NT at the latest, and is showing its age . . .written in VB3 IIRC . . . Jeff isn't updating it.

Beer Engine does what I want but I'm not happy with the way it saves recipes or the printing process . . . I may be forced to look at Beersmith . . . but of course there are various online calculators like This one

There is a good one that is being continually developed for the mac called Beer Alchemy

I think nearly every AG brew I've done is logged on the site recipe calculator. I can access it in Windows, Linux, Ipod, Wii and the ps3 :thumb:
I might even publish my house brew, which is a mix of nicking bits off you all

Yeah, I've been playing around with Beersmith and BeerEngine, and to be honest the recipe calc on this site is more than adequate most of the time. The only thing that annoys me is that you can'd amend hop amounts after you've entered them. You have to delete them and start again
