Hi JB,

Mine should be ready for bottling tomorrow/Saturday. It's achieved it's target of 1.010 (making it 5% already) and I'm hoping it will do some more in the bottle!

Just looking at which to buy next as I type.... not sure whether to go for a strong one with fewer litres or the Pils kit which is 20ltrs of 4.5%.... decisions decisions. Or pay another £16 and do something different from design a brew??? :wha:
What are you going for while you build your AG kit up?

Dave

Hi BF

My next brew is going to be a TimTaylor Landlord AG, borrowing my mates kit, plan to do this on tuesday :)
Go for a strong on mate, one for the cupboard and when ya feel the urge to blow yer mind, haha :drunk:

JB

Ah, nice work on using your mates AG.. Timmy Taylor's is a nice drop too!
Yeah might just go for a stronger beer for that secret stash of rocket fuel. Only downside being that I'm brassic and really need to brew a good (as many litres as poss) batch for my next brew to keep some beer in the store cupboard for Christmas!

I'm looking at how I can do a cheapish extract brew... i'll keep researching like the tight yorkshireman I am!

For your next brew you should consider extract brewing or partial mash. Kits have disapointed me time after time so i am not taking the plunge to, not quite the dark side of AG, but the grey side of extract. My frist brew will be 23 litres of Dusseldorf Alt to keep the misses happy :D

Greetings

Just bottled this one, a little disappointed on the OG 1014 (6.1abv), was hoping it would be lower supposed to come out at around 8%, hopefully will drop some more whilst in the bottle, i'll check og again before i taste the first bottle, 6-8wks it reckons, ill go for the 8 weeks

JB

Strangely, I've ended up with a higher abv. OG was 1052 and FG of 1008 so approx 5.8% . Not sure how this happens but I'm assuming the hyrdometer is right. Happy days.
Oh and I used the advice re: dissolving the sugar in hot water before adding to 2nd FV. Dead easy and preferred to adding sugar to each bottle (and having to calculate for smaller bottles).

Hi Kryal
Yeah I think I will join you there. The ones from Design a Brew are about £26 though. How are you going about yours? where do you buy from and what kind of cost are you looking at?

I am moving into the extract brew and partial mash slowly.

Beers of the World kits use hops and specialty grains, as do the big brother of those the Brewers Choice Kits; all from Brupacs. I dont know if the BOTW kits are hopped, but I know that their Dusseldorf Alt beer is the favourite alt beer of my German girlfriend! Really, its better than the shop ones!

I am brewing a Brewers Choice kit soon, which has a load of malt extract, some grains and some hops. I dont think their ME is hopped, but I will find out when I open the bag. You add in more sugar, DME or LME and make the brew.

From there I will be buying extract, grains and hops as I want them. Go buy the John Palmer book - How to Brew. Its like a school textbook on brewing and you learn loads!

Problem is that it is very US Based and lots of the recommended practices are over the top and unnecessary . . . not a book that I would recommend . . . Try John Alexanders Guide to Craftbrewing for a more technical book that is UK centric. . . . it goes into more detail about brewing than Graham Wheelers Brew Your Own Real Ale At Home . . . Another great book IMO. . . .

Just waiting for a couple of Authors to finish their tomes, and then we can finally have a good book on brewing that is written for UK brewers by UK Authors

Sounds good Kryal, let us know how that turns out. I'm still deliberating on what to try next, which is necessary cos I have no funds to start anything until pay day!

Bottled my Brewferm Diabolo last night, by my reckoning it's about 7% which is under the 8% target but I'm happy enough with, the tiny taste that I had was powerful stuff... :thumb: used the syrup method to secondary ferment, 90g into a little of the beer which I'd carefully scooped from the fv (after I'd sterilised the pan) let it sit in the second fv for about 1/2 hour whilst I sorted the bottles and then cracked on! :drunk:

I'm gonna have a taste of the Tarwebier on Saturday... a week after bottling... and then 1 bottle a week thereafter to see how it improves up until the recommended 8 weeks. Sometimes you just have to do these things

I tried a bottle of this 1 week after bottling and it was far from ready... had a funny smell to it but tasted ok (ish).
I then tried another after 12 days or so and the smell had gone and the taste improved!
I now resolve to leave this brew alone until the recomended 6-8 weeks... scouts honour! :geek:

Patience is the key to home brewing mate, i'm sure it will be well worth the wait, mine is as clear as it will be, but still 4-6wks to go

Yeah I know but I was just trying so I can compare with the 'finished' product.
Got my first AG brew next weekend, sadly not my kit, but am joining a fellow THBF brewer so i can see how it's done. I think I may even be sharing the spoils, which is very generous indeedy! It's gonna be a TT Landlord clone... GET IN!
You up to much?

Nice one Bishop, looking forward to trying my TT Landlord clone, just put a big grain and hop order with a mate, gonna go half on the costs, so hopefully next weekend we're gonna do a christmas brew

Peace

JB

Just opened a bottle of my Brewferm Tarwebier... it's about 4-5 weeks old now and looking and tasting great. Really pleased with this kit.

Hi Kryal... decided on an interim brew and chose a BOTW Christmas Ale. I'm a little late to get this started, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it just as much in the New Year! As of saturday, I now own a 5 gallon boiler so there is nothing stopping me now. I think I'll do a few extract brews and then finally to AG.
