After much putting off and messing about with other stuff I have finally got started on the brewery building. First off was making a new mash tun from a 38.5 lt thermobox.

The parts for this came from Home Brew Builder and the thermobox from Bergland. I already have a 38.5 lt thermobox which I have been using as a mash tun, but wanted to convert that to a HLT, which is the next build. But first off was making a bottom draining mash tun. Following a similar build to Vossy1's, although I used a boat skin bulkhead rather than the type he used. The parts were ordered from Home Brew Builder, and apart from cutting down the bulkhead, it fitted together perfectly. The 38.5 lt thermoboxes come with a side tap, and as I don't know how to weld SS I figured I would use the existing hole for thermowell. Which after drilling the through the wall bulkhead fitted perfectly. The dial thermometer I plan to change to a one wire temperature probe, but that's down the line.

The nearly finished article:

The underside, waiting for me to squirt in some expanding foam after a leak check. I think I'll wrap the pipework in cling film which should make it easier to remove the foam should I ever need to. The outer skin was cut with an angle grinder and finished off with a dremel and diamond cutting disc. I don't know about the 50 lt ones but the thickness of the insulation is not thick enough, so the pipe protrudes below the outer skin by about 5 mm. There is also a lip, and the pipe fits within this, so it doesn't protrude beyond the lower lip. So standing the right way up is no problem.

And a view of the inside. When testing this I noticed that the bottom was slightly convex, this may drop when full, but when testing with about 5lt of water I had a 800 cl deadspace, which I thought was quite high. But better than my side drain model which in use has about 2-3 lt deadspace.

I do have a grain filter which I also got from Home Brew Builder similar to this one. But I didn't take a picture.

Anyway enjoy the porn. :thumb: Next up is to convert the old mash tun into an HLT. Then I can brew again.

nice one Bob, enjoy playing with the expanding foam........ :D :D

I just need to figure out how to contain it. Maybe cut down an ice cream tub and screw that on. Then squirt the stuff in. Which I know from experience can be a bit sticky and messy. Or what I might do is squirt it into a plastic bag which if I get it right should be removable if required.

plastic bag sounds good.
My effort consisted of covering with cling film then covering that completely with masking tape and squiriting the stuff underneath it. few days to dry pealed of tape and film and flattened it with sand paper...... very messy and I went through a waistcoat and jumper in the process.
