I've emailed Brewdog to ask if their strong beers are still classed as beers for duty purposes or as spirits. We'll just have to wait and see if I get a response.

The definition I said was from CJJ Berry's First Steps in Wine Making, I'd be of a mind to take his view. Concentration of alcohol by freezing is actually worse from a health view anyway, because everything is concentrated, not just ethanol, so that you end up with less potable alcohol. It's not worth it outside of a commercial environment really.

That may be the case you lot but on here we have a simple rule.

The production of alcohol by any method of distillation must not be discussed on the forum, neither must you add links to the forum to other places where distillation is discussed.

Now Calum has given you the benefit of the doubt and a nudge in the right direction, so please do not mention it again or it the thread will get locked.

Here's the reply from Brewdog:

Hi Richard,

They are classed as beers in the UK as no distillation takes place.
Interestingly they are classed as spirits in some export markets though!

Thanks,

Well that *is* interesting...

...I wonder if it's been tested in court...?

I wouldn't fancy being the one of which an example gets made. Anyway, its still too close to the wire for us on THBF so we still won't be allowing discussions of it as far as I can see.
