Hi guys,
I bought some perforated 304 stainless sheet with 3mm holes at 5mm centres and have knocked up a hop filter at work, I'm going to fit some silicon hose to the edges that hang over the side of the vessel to prevent scratching.
I'm going to try it out this weekend and report back.

Curved profile to fit between sidewall of vessel and elements:

Fingers crossed.

Home now and here is how it fits:

Looks like this might just work ;) :thumb:

hmm, looks like a really handy device!
However, i think a hop-spider would work better, because it lets the hops "swim around" more... With this thingie, it looks like all the hops will be stuck in one small space. I have no idea if there will be a noticeable difference in the taste tho..

Looks very smart. I've just rigged up a simple dip-tube that I'll be testing at the weekend, will post back with the results.

It's bog standard 2mm hole perforated SS as used in mash tun fb's, and it performs brilliantly. I've only had an issue with it once with a very big IPA and an immersion chiller...the cold break blocked it   ...seriously, I had to use a egg slice to scrape it off, then the wort would flow...then it'd get stuck again..then scrape again etc etc...and on and on   I'd defo have #40 before the plate chiller in some way. I've been trying to think of a way to get a mini filter behind the vertical screen...bowing it like you've done may be the option as not enough room behind it at the mo :hmm:
Then again I do like the brewers hardware filter too that Barnee linked

I made up a #40 mesh disc for my hop rocket , I didn't want to use it for every brew but I guess I might have to short term so I don't leave seeds in the plate chiller.

Nice work Vossy :thumb: I have the blichmann hop rocket so I just used a round disc of #40 mesh , with my set up I use the hop rocket upside down . Thanks for sharing your work it's nice to see others ideas.

Pardon this comment. I think i misunderstood the whole purpose of this device

Well I used this on Friday for AG#16 Goose island ipa,
I made an additional #40 mesh filter which sat inside this unit about 200mm long and with a return on the top lip.

This 23L brew had 200g of hops in it so it's a good test of protection for the plate chiller.

I'm glad to report that nothing got through, the #40 mesh had a nice coating of fine crud that just hosed off. I'm pleased how it performed, the 3mm holes stopped the hops and the #40 mesh stopped the seeds etc.

Only my second use of the plate chiller so still playing with flow rates etc, according to the thrumometer the cooled wort was around 16-18c so I had to restrict the outlet from the plate chiller to the FV to raise the temp a little for adding the SA04 yeast.

Still learning how best to use the Braumeister , may start to sparge to ensure full use of grains.
 :thumb:

Vigo are now selling the Braumeister version:

Interesting about the seeds, I guess they might get through without the finer mesh.

I'm wating on some stainless mesh to arrive to affix to my traditional, cheapo diptube t-piece setup, the diptube on its own gets blocked.

I mashed with 34L and sparged with 2L of water last brew and got 80% efficiency and 24.5L into the fermenter.

Hi Tim,
A word of advice , make sure you strip apart your dip tube assembly and clean it post boil,

I made a copper dip tube similar to "swiggingpigs". I used a trimmed silicon hose to hold the dip tube in the outlet during use. It makes a lovely bug trap if your not careful as I found out.

Lucky for me I found it during a pump cleaning session and not a brew day.

YuK!

How do you get on with cleaning your 50L ? Must be a bugger to lift about to get hops etc out?

Cheers

Will check out the dip tube after a brew, it comes out easily enough.

Cleaning out isn't much more difficult than a 70 litre sized pot, it weighs about the same, so far I have managed to clean it in the garden, all I do is lay it on it's side on a slight downwards slant on a raised bit of decking, I empty the hops by hand, then hose out the rest. I brush around the elements and the inside of the unit and hose out the pumps through the pump outlets. Then turn the unit upside down completely and dismantle each pump, remove any hops and crud and leave it all to air dry, takes 5-10 mins and it's all pretty easy!

Nothing as bling you guys have done, but I knocked this up for my last brew.

A small filter to the outlet of the BM. Nothing flash, but it proved to work well.

This was made from a stainless tea infusing ball broken in half and wedged behind the heating element and over the outlet. See attached pics.

Took ten minutes to make and cost about AU$3.00 and comes with a second spare.

Cheers
Andy
