Brewing in a bag ,in Northampton
i have been pitching the yeast in to my 1st biab brew today, an ipa style

it was brewed 3 weeks ago and kept in a cube ,
i popped in the hydrometer in, and it read around 1.030

is this a bit low, :wha:

i used
4gk of marris
1/2 pale malt
1/2 kg of crystal,

mashed for 100 mins,
and with a dunk sparge in an fv with hot water,
a 75 min boil

i did end up with 6 gallons of wort ,

EDIT ....i have just realized the wort came out at 7 gallons which may account for the figures

Brewed 3 weeks ago, pitched yeast today? What's a cube?

Anyway, that aside, 1030 does sound low, especially given the amount of fermentables you listed. What temp was it at when you measured 1030, i.e. did you correct for temp?

its an aussie and american method,

heres my cube of wort,

its a no chill method of wort chilling and storage ,
they can be stored for months before fermenting, some have been kept for 2 yrs,
the temp was cool when i measured it today ,

i used an easy to read , plastic boots hydro i inherited ,
i may have to check it against another glass one ,

heres a rundown of the brew,

Water
33litres..
Grain
4kg maris
½ kg pale wheat
½ crystal
Mash
heat up to 160
mash at 152 for 105 mins
Stirred once at 45mins

Mash out
167deg for 15 mins
remove bag,
Sparge in bucket….6L of hot water,

Boil
Time 75 minutes
Hops
40g fuggles @ start
50g bobek @ last 10 mins..

Every day is a school day.

here's a post i was reading earlier today with regards improving efficiency. viewtopic.php?f=21&t=32825
might be worth checking the water to grain ratio as this is the only thing that i can think of :wha: . It should be around 2.5:1

one guilty party has been found..

the placcy hydro from boots reads 990 in plain water where as a couple of glass ones read 1000

so im 10 points up...

EDIT ... i have since realized that the total wort came out at around 7 gallons ....

i did ferment a demijohn of the dregs from the boiler hot break and all... ;)
over the last 3 weeks..and bottled it yesterday on tasting it was very nice although not very hoppy,

heres the before fermenting,

ive put 4 litres into pet bottles .. will sample at xmas

and a couple of glass for long term keeping

really enjoyed the biab experiance ...produced some nice beer ,

i have now put nearly 6 gallons into my new ,fermenting cabinet in the kitchen,
its heated by a 60w lamp on a temp controller, and all insulated ,

i also have a slab of polystyrene one top of the fv..

the dearest part was the door[to match the rest of the kitchen ]...£20

and the controller £12,

the woodwork came from the neighbours kitchen renovation,
as he bought a huge ex display kitchen and scrapped a fair bit...

the cabinet is on castors, which ive been saving for years for something... :nah:

should be good enough for some all year brewing at good temps.. :thumb:

its a 60w lightbulb in a metal can. The stc1000 will turn it on and it will heat the cabinet up to desried temp.

artyb - that build is looking very good! :thumb:
