probably get slated for this but one of my favourites is 12 year old ben bracken from lidl's :) and last time i looked it was also one of the cheapest.
Also important is what he adds to whisky, if he takes it neat then no problem but if like me he likes a wee sup of water in it then make sure it is not the chlorinated muck that comes from the tap, buy him enough good quality spring water to go with the whisky. I am lucky as i have my own spring which goes great with whisky or for brewing :D

blootoon ive also being told this is a very nice drop. ill have to pop in to lidl`s and get a bottle. the fella who told me about it drinks whisky all the time and he said its as good as whiskys you would pay treble for. now i don't know but im going to give it a try for sure

Try to find out what brands he likes. He probably got some 7-12 year olds of some brand. The easiest you can do is to get, lets say an 18 or 21 of the same range.

I know this purely based on experience. If you like one of the cheaper/younger bottles, you WILL enjoy the older ones.

Teachers?

I'm not a whisky drinker so can't really add anything.

I'll get my coat.

Certain people on here will demand a stoning for that sort of talk.

I knew this would happen...

Take dad to a good whisky shop for a tasting, and let him choose... :thumb: :thumb:

Why would you drink engine degreaser?

Why on earth would you put THAT STUFF on a engine, its only fit for unblocking urinals

I've been looking this in Lidl and wondering what it was like. This thread is a little old but it seems as it it used to be a single malt called Tamnavulin, from speyside. Might be different now, it depends on how many casks they bought, but probably still a decent single malt that has been re-labled. Think i might just buy a bottle tomorrow to see what it's like

well spend £30 and use this voucher to get £5.00 offhttp://www.hotukdeals.com/vouchers/...-using-printable-voucher-1560972#post18145144

I've got one of those vouchers and will be going to Lidl today, so will report back my findings!

Update:

Soooo. I bought a bottle of the Ben Bracken, was £19.95 and well, it's not one of the best I've tried. It's nice a nice light gold colour. Nose - quite floral, no smoke or peat. Seems to have sherry notes which are rather nice, with a sweetness and initially quite light flavour. However, after you swallow, the finish is quite rough and spicy. It's certainly not as refined as say Dalwhinnie. Considering my local Tesco usually has Dalwhinne on at £25, I'll spend the extra five on that, in future.

hehe... teachers..

I think the last time i purchased a bottle, was with the purpose of using it to sanitize oak chips, and to give them somewhat of a weak whisky flavor... That's the only thing i use it for now.
