I think all experienced forumites know what we mean when we use these 2 words. I know they are technically different but unless it is really critical to the question(which it can be) other people are just being pedantic at times and can hi-jack the original post. Come on chaps lets stop pointing out the difference if you think the poster as used the wrong word but in the right context.

Sorry that was my fault. Wasn't being pedantic, I wasn't sure of the difference or even if there was one. I'm new to this game so just firing questions at people at the moment

No worries and as Clint says fire away.

It is something that is mentioned fairly often as there is a difference between both words but as has been said we all know both mean the same thing when we use the term here.

Guys I've always used VWP and rinsed and never a problem what's the thing about not rinsing?

The website I have started using for my brewing stuff have started selling this as an alternative to StarSan

It's called Chemipro-Acid and seems more or less the same as Star San, not sure if this will be of use/available in UK?

what's the thing about not rinsing?

It just removes a possible recontamination pathway. And once you have it you really don't want to go back. It's also less chance for me to cause localised flooding. Again and again and again.

Certainly cheaper than StarSan etc. I imagine. Just did a quick shufty to look at prices here and in UK, its less than half price here (around €2 /500mls), so may give it a whirl! Would much rather an alcohol taste in my beer than a vinegary-bleachy one!!

It's a BBC article, it gives no source. The water will quickly evaporate and then it's dry sterilising. That takes more than 15 minutes. The hot jam probably does the job! To wet sterilise needs 77C for at least 30 seconds.

so boiling water will do the job? in 30 secs - so if I preheat my bottles so the boiling water wont crack them I'm sorted? - only problem would be drying the insides before putting a cap on them....

If you were dunking it into water at that temp and leaving it there. Pouring some water in and swishing it will make the water cool quite quickly and as you swirl it around localised temperatures will plummet. Sanitisers cause cell wall problems so their either burst out or stuff can get in and kill them. Unless you've got a mad amount of hot water then it's not reliable, and heating that water will cost a lot more than star san.

The problem with ethanol sanitisers is it evaporates so quickly the effect of the sanitiser is short lived.

Yeah this had crossed my mind, I'm just really wary of sanitiser flavour in my beer. I've ruined a couple of batches now from not rinsing or draining properly before bottling. I'll see how it goes and report back

Boots baby sterilisation tablets for £1.99 a kick work just fine if you can't get your hands on some vwp or starsan - I had no problems with my last brew using those
