read some good reviews about beersmith so had downloaded the trail version to give it shot.

But struggling to use it and find out what it can do for you. So far the it offers various calculators to work out various equations, however these are readily available on the web free, mostly here in the calculators section.

I was most looking at how to adjust my water, that being the most complicated part for me. Dont get me wrong I aint great at figuring stuff out, but it seems all it does is clearly state what i already know, which how much of what i have. It has some preloaded water profiles and you can compare your own with a target profile but it doesnt seem to work out what additives you need, just lets you adjust a little of this or a little of that, while adjusting the difference till you get it write.

I thought the it would have a function that would list the amount of additives you would need to get a target water, is it me, anyone help?

cheers :thumb:

Yer had a look at that and it proberbly as deep as i'll get. I just thought that if you were to gfo to the trouble of writing a programme like that, it would include all the calculations for you.

I was hoping, and still hope is there, that I could input my recipe, say what water i had and target water needed and it would be included in the recipe printout.

To be honest aeddon, and it's been said before, target waters aren't really of any value, at least not until you're making good beer, and only if you can then tell the difference, which will probably be minimal.
Aleman has covered these points in another post.
I do agree with you that beer smith could do with including an additions calculator for salts, they aren't that quick on updating it, neither are pro mash. What you have to remember though is that when those programmes first came out there were no forums with equal software, but the forums have caught up

Here in Australia it's probably the most widely used of the 5 - 6 brewing software packages available. There are a few little quirks that need to be taken into account when designing a recipe but overall very good.

Screwy

I'm not that bothered about creating a perfect water, its not on the top of my priority list, I feel there are more important things to crack first, efficiency, temp control, nice shiney shiney stuff etc... Ive had a read about but it sink in as fast as it used too :) I guess i dont realise how lucky we are now with all the calculators and information about.

thanks for the replies, I dont think beersmiths for me, if there was a program that could calculate additions that would be a handy but otherwise i'll plod on

cheers :thumb:

At some time in the not too distant future, I plan to add a calculator to the site that will do that :thumb:
