Beer in Cans.

Remember back in the mists of time, beer bottles had a cork insert inside the caps, plastic wasn't invented then. I do wonder if this made a better seal?

According to th Milk the Funk wiki, it looks like it's probably just a cosmetic thing, but some folk reckon that aging beers with caps, you can get some off flavours that you don't get with cork (esp. acidic beers like lambics and the like).

Now here's a thought: my last two lagers (brewed October and November of last year) were beginning to form a white, powdery pellicule just before I bottled them after 4 weeks lagering in secondary together with just the slightest whiff of acetic acid. Ten months later, no surface film in the bottle, no vinegar at all and grunts of apprecuation from our German and Austrian guests. While I'm not going to do this deliberately, I wonder whether acetobacter could be an effective oxygen scavenger in a well-sealed bottle!
Had a similar experience with cider, by the way, which always forms a pellicule since I don't sterilise the apple juice.

If you're not getting acetic acid (and you're being careful not to get oxygen into your beer), it could be Brett forming the pellicle? That'll definitely munch your oxygen.

I too have some well aged beers coming up for about 3 years, they have taken on a sherry like flavour which I believe is an ingress of oxygen. Due to their high ABV I don't take this as a negative, but more as a positive flavour addition, usually drunk to finish a 'session'. Matter of fact I may have one now.

Much prefer bottles, only buy cans if there is a beer that particularly catches my eye. Part of that is a bottle can be reused though so added bonus.

I'll happily drink from either, I don't see that there's much difference. It's mostly perceived and we're all fallible.

I bottle condition everything cause it's cheap, they go in the dishwasher and it's better for the environment as you can reuse them forever.

I don't drink directly from either so I'm not too bothered either way as the beer ends up in a nice glass. There is something more pleasing in popping the cap of a bottle. Then again, cans are technically superior, and I've had plenty of good beers from cans, either filtered and carbonated or can conditioned.

If its got a decent carb level ( eg lagers and american IPA) i often drink straight from can as you loose some of the fix and chill tranfering it to aglass. same with bottles to be honest much of the time.

Don't you miss the large portion of the aroma from drinking from a small orifice? Taste is largely linked to what we smell rather than what the tongue picks up.

Just ordered some party kegs (full) as I hope to be able to reuse them. Does anybody have any experience of these?

Don't you miss the large portion of the aroma from drinking from a small orifice? Taste is largely linked to what we smell rather than what the tongue picks up.

Sometimes but I normally take a big in hale after opening and before sipping and I drink them quite quick. I often use a glass too though.

Anyway I bought a 5l mini keg from Morrison reduced to £10 we drank the beer Shipyard IPA. I've removed the plus and I have bought 5 replacement plugs off eBay. If you go to YouTube you'll get the idea. You just need to sanitise,prime, fill and re-bung.

What's your secret? I have only managed to push the plug in, haven't managed to get it out.

I saw the YouTube with the guy guy removing the plug, I just destroyed it. Just bought replacements.
