Location
Ulverston Cumbria.
Does anyone else have problems with the freeview BBC channels once the summer months arrive, I have discussed it elsewhere and it would seem it's not uncommon or limited to my location, very annoying.

Do you use any different electrical equipment in the summer?

The reason I ask is because when i moved house recently I would always lose HD reception whenever I switched my DVD recorder on. One of those intermittent (it seemed to me) problems that took a while to work out. but I'd also lose reception at other times too, mostly it seemed when it was raining.

Eventually replaced the aerial and fitted new cabling and that's sorted it all, so the basic problem was obviously a poor signal getting to the telly.

We picked up a cheap Sky deal this year, precisely because of this issue. I get a bit of footy and SWMBO gets cookery and house makeover kak.

I wish it was that simple, replaced the aerial and cable as the old one blew down everything is the same winter and summer but we always have this picture breakup in hot weather, I now put my tablet on the table and stream it live on iPlayer when it's bad.

What I don't get is why all the others are fine but the BBC is rubbish.

Have you tried retuning your telly to a different transmitter sometimes you can pick up more than one?

I have tried everything I can think of or read about what really annoys me is I am paying for a licence and am not getting the service I am paying for, there has to be a reason this happens every Summer but only to the BBC channels.

it seems to me like a possible cabling issue, check all the connections, the slightest stray wire from the outer mesh will cause problems. It could be a heat thing

I have worked on many TV systems with various different phantom faults and its always been loose or bad connections

Thanks for your input but how can it be a connection that is to blame if when viewing on an overcast day the BBC channels work fine and on cloudless warm days in summer it throws up an intermittent picture and sound break up problem, if all channels did it at the same time I would put it down to something my end but that is not the case.

Do your neighbours have the same problems?
If so look for local reception difficulties, even an 'atmospherics' problem. When high pressures dominates it can affect the TV signal. I say this because sometimes in SE England unusual high pressure weather systems disrupt TV signals by mixing English and some European TV signals with the result that TV reception is not very good on this side of the channel, although this is rare.
If your neighbours are OK it could be your aerial, If its an old aerial, it may not be up to the job especially since analogue was phased out. Channels were shuffled about when analogue went and the digital BBC channels might now be at the 'wrong end' of your aerial tune.
Alternatively have you thought of Freesat?

I asked the same question many months ago on a forum about T.V and set top boxes etc and a few of the answers pointed to 'atmospherics', i wouldn't know about the neighbour as she is so spaced out she probably wouldn't understand the question, its not really a big problem just an annoyance as i like to watch the news and weather report in the kitchen (freeview T.V) in the morning before going to work and as i have said if it acts up i can watch it on my tablet.

I do have a Foxsat (freesat box) in the living room which i rate highly its the second one i have bought the first one was not HD, a great bit of kit which rarely suffers from picture quality issues.

I think it's got summat to do with high atmospheric pressure messing with the way signals get transmitted by bouncing off the ionosphere. Or summat like that. Looks like you've blown it til the HP clears orf. Meanwhile I'm still holding out for some free and unannounced Italian ****.

Yes, the rain is bouncing off the car roof just outside my window, no thunder or lightning yet but nice to see the wet stuff has arrived.

From the BBC site -

Very occasionally, unusual atmospheric conditions (high air pressure) may cause picture break-up or even complete loss of reception. There is nothing anyone can do about this and the only solution is to wait for the weather to change.

Signal from transmitter:

Freeview signals are broadcast in groups, known as Multiplexes. It’s not uncommon for one or two multiplexes to be broadcast on reduced power. This is particularly common during the 2008-2012 Digital Switchover. You can find out if your local transmitter is operating on low power, or if there is transmitter work ongoing using the BBC Transmitter Information Tool http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/

I have just checked BBC 1 and its working fine again its thundering and lightening outside so its got to be something to do with the "unusual atmospheric conditions (high air pressure)" quoted above, oh well looks like there is nothing i can do about it, must remember to keep the tablet charged.

BBC News 10 minutes ago : archive aerial footage taken over the Himalayas sometime in the 1920s is giving scientists invaluable information to help tackle climate change. Christ they don't miss a trick do they. Drip, drip, drip. It really is about time they realised they've been rumbled and about time they got a real job like shelf-stacking. Trump's got the right idea.

I just recently replaced and rewired my aerials as I receive ROI channels as well.My local transmitter does not broadcast HD so I had to retune and I was suffering from similar problems to yourself as I have two televisions.I installed a Nikkai HQ Aerial Amplifier with Digital Bypass 2 Way from Maplins and problem has now been cured.Error due to loss of signal power intermittently and more so in hot weather.
I used CB radios and sideband units years ago and always found it easier to talk to someone in Cornwall,France or even Canada than it was to someone within a 10 mile radious and all due to atmospheric conditions.
