Anyone used Baird's Malts. Ive not heard of them but Worcester Hop Shop has a good deal on a 25kg bag of there Pale Malt.....

Was going to give it a go.

Checking out their website the diastatic power of their pale ale malt appears quite low compared to the typical rating for Maris Otter. If you're using primarily base malts (i.e. brewing mainly pale ales and bitters) this won't be an issue because the rating is high enough for self-conversion, but if you want to use it as a base for something a little more 'exotic' you might be in for a long mash because there might not be sufficient 'spare' diastatic power to convert the starches in your adjuncts.

Nobody has said it's C#ap so order has been placed. Will be brewing with Cheap Pale Malt on Sunday.
It's **** Don't use it!!!

Bairds are well known for their very high quality malt, I have no reason to doubt that their brewing malt is anything but excellent. . . .although as it says on the website it's only really suitable with up to 20% non diastatic adjuncts, other maltsters malt will quite happily deal with up to 50% non enzymatic malts.

I've just been looking at the bairds website it's got the typical Pale Ale Malt Specification, but not the maris otter pale ale malt specification.

I wanted to know the spec and this is what the worcester hop shop emailed me back on their Bairds Maris Otter after asking them

Specification
Moisture % 3.6
Extract C 307
Colour IO 5.1
Total Nitrogen 1.54
Soluble Nitrogen 0.65
SNR 41

Been using this a while now.

Assuming that I only use 20% of total mash weight as other malts, then this malt would still be ok to use? Or is still worth spending a few quid more?

Presumably it wont matter if I substitute my crystal for caramalt? I hear that this is enzymatic?

Thanks,

DirtyC

I have used it in the past but now use Warminster as my local brewery did me a good deal £50 for 50kg delivered to my door. :thumb:  :D

We just got a bag of their maris otter. To be honest we have been using their malt for a while now and had no problems with efficiency or any thing else for that matter. I think its just hearsay. Its made us some tasty beers

Plenty of people use Bairds, to good effect, and it does make decent beer, however compared to Fawcetts, Warminster or Crisps, Baird's is cheap but ****.

When I use it I really notice a marked hard to remove scum in the underback and copper, and also find that efficiency in the brew house is very variable batch to batch, therefore if it was to make a choice, out of fawcetts crisps or bairds, it would be Crisps pale from The Malt Miller, & that decision is taking into account I can buy a sack of Bairds for £12.75 a sack locally.

Warminster is good too.

Just used Bairds today for the first time :| I got my target OG but was worried I wouldn't because the first running's from the tun didn't taste as sweet as normal and the taste was different to anything else i've used..Pearl, MO, GP.:hmm: and the colour is slightly darker...
I carried on and was surprised to see the correct reading at the end based on my normal target of 85% efficiency...
When cooled after the boil it now tastes O.k so I'm now excited about the final outcome. :D

10.50 kg Bairds "Pale Ale" (3.0 SRM) Grain 95.72 %
0.47 kg Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) Grain 4.28 %
155.00 gm Challenger [8.16 %] (60 min) Hops 47.4 IBU
45.00 gm Challenger [8.16 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
2 Pkgs Nottingham Yeast (Lallemand #-) Yeast-Ale

Everything is now Challenger for the forseable future...lol, got 5kg to use..

I used half bairds and half :wha: can't remember and ender up 10 points higher than expected   Looks like my proper job clone will be 7%

I found the top 1/4 of the sack mostly husks, very coarse milling I thought, I might get more efficiency further down the sack.... but for £16.00 from a local brewery I'll give it a go!!
