Bad hops

I received a pretty good supply of hop samples at the local homebrew club party.
I thought I lucked out until I opened one to use and it smelled like vomit. I opened all 20 of them and the only 4 that weren't nasty had no smell at all. I tossed the lot into the bin.
I'm not all that upset about it as they were free, but I'll never buy anything from any suppler that thinks giving away ***** is a good advertisement for their company.

I have to agree with you there. Why would you?

We brewers are lucky in that we all open a packet of hops and religiously stick our nose in it or it could have been disaster

It turns out that the hop supplier doesn't deal in smaller sizes than one pound, so the ones I got had been repackaged and the original supplier had no control on how the hops were handled.

Even though I didn't actually buy anything from them the owner sent me some hops free of charge.
