It's my opinion that only when people feel secure in their lives that they become "atheists", but at the first sign of danger 99% of them immediately resort to prayer!
Just to drop something else into this discussion:
I do not believe in any sort of divine being. I do not believe in prayer having any use.
BUT I guess I may be a hypocrite, because the last time I prayed (with eyes closed and fear in my heart) was when my wife was driving.

I was going to say "I know what you mean" but she might see it and then I'd really have to pray. So I won't.

No, no, no, Simon. I'm not getting involved in a chapter and verse tennis match, particularly when my interpretation is as valid as yours (according to your rules, not mine, which seems to put an end to discussion) and especially when I asked you to say how the regime you propose would be beneficial. Let's leave it then until we can dispute face to face over a horn or two of mead in the halls of Valhalla. But, just to give you a clue where I'm coming from, I thing the verse "Go forth and multiply, have dominion over nature and subdue it." is directly responsible for the mess we're in now. As for Jesus, this is the guy who urged his followers to ignore filial duty and "let the dead bury their own dead" the guy who caused a perfectly good fig tree to be destroyed because it wasn't bearing fruit as it wasn't the season. What a flidd! We need to look at the deeds and words of Jesus with new eyes. So this sort of stuff would certainly inprove our lives?
Right I'm with Rodcx500z. I, too, have no more comments. I just hope I haven't piissed him off with mine.
Beer calls.

Sorry but you say your not getting into then sort of do but heres my response to your points.
Do you really think people go round destroying things and quoting this as justification?
Genesis
28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, s“Be fruitful and multiply and fill theearth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of theheavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, Ihave given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every treewith seed in its fruit. tYou shall have them for food. 30 And uto every beast of the earthand to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everythingthat has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 vAndGod saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there wasevening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Copy and pasted from https://www.esv.org/Matthew+1/ which seems to leave out some spacing.
The dead bury there own dead was saying you can't use that as an excuse and the fig tree represents Gods judgement on Israel.

Not googling and stopped reading at this point to see how I could do. Sorry it's going to be massively against the current flwo of the conversation. :-)

1 - Jesus is the obvious answer but it could be Jeshua as I've seen that version, or Emmanuel as in some parts of the Bible.
2 - Aramaic (I'll confess to using google to remember what the language was called, but googled it in a round about way, not "what did jesus speak").
3 - 10 - 20 years, but Mark could have been as close as 3 - 5 years from research I've read.
4 - about 50 years, seem to recall it was about the 80's AD and the crucifiction was around 33 AD.

How did I do?
1 - Jesus is based on the Greek Iesu/Iesous, The most likely is something like Joshua/Jeshua/Yeshua.
2 - Aramaic
3 - 30 to 40 years later
4 - 60 to 70 years later

At the end of the day, all are 'best guesses'.

I was surprised by the 63% Atheist. About 73 votes at the time of this writing. I chose "Other."
First inclination would be that half of home brewers are Atheists. I know that's not necessarily the case.
I'm not traditionally religious in the least, myself; however, I do lean heavily toward spiritual aspects.

What was even more surprising was the subject not being shut down.
My take is religion does more good than harm but that opinion could change so let's call it "today's opinion."

Actually 46 votes for atheist and 63%.

I
Well I've just added myself to the minority of church-going Christians in the poll!

Yes, me too. Practising & serving Christian.

I refuse to accept "religious"...... It implies merely a creature of habit. I prefer " A man of Faith". Living it, breathing it and (sadly) finding I have to spend more time defending that life choice than I am really comfortable with. Undeterred though because death does not scare me.

I think the scientific method would be to read Richard Dawkins, Bertrand Russell, etc (no need to rehash their arguments, just read the books - read, summarize their arguments and then refute if you can); It really boils down to - what created the universe? a God; who created this "God"? gosh, let me get all mystical, circles of life etc. If you really think that when you die you have more continued existence than a squashed dog in the road, I have a gold brick to sell you.

Sorry mate, but Richard Dawkins's book "the great god delusion" is one of the worst books I have ever tried to read. In 57 years (of being able to read). The only books I have decided that were "must reads" and given up on are:

"Critique of pure Reason" by Immanuel Kant. Just, actually WOT? Pre industrial drivel, possible fodder for the modern anti-industrialists, who knows. If ever time moved on....
"Mein Kampf" - utter twaddle and unreadable. Gave up on p56 or something - turns out tertiary syphilis suffered by the author may offer some sort of explanation
"The Great God Delusion" (as above, Dawkins). By Chapter 3, I wondered what the guy's problem was, in that he was no less evangelical than the supposed delusional. Irritating beyond factual, which is not forgivable.

Totally agree with you about Mien Kampf. It is a truly terrible book, that I have attempted to read a couple of times. Terrible as in unreadable. It might also be terrible as in truly evil, but it was so s**te that I never found out!

Yes. as in - just - Yes!

If no actual human alive can get to the end, does it mean that that would define an evil book? (LOL)
