Could not think where to post this, and sadly its not mine, someone gave it to my dad. I'd love to give it a taste, but I'm pretty certain this will never be opened.

A quick search online and I can see why it wont be opened!

Wowsers!!! That's quite a present to get at £195 a bottle lol!! Think I'd be hanging on to it too....or saving it for a very very special occasion!!! :D

I really want to try it, but shall be good and give it back, where it will probably sit in a cupboard for another 40 years

Wow! I would LOVE to try that out. Howabout a tasting at £5 per member of here and give the cash to your dad? I'll bring stilton and those expensive marmite biscuits! They're darned lovely with decent Port. But its probably best savoured by less ignorant drinkers than me!

Very nice would go lovely with a nice bit of strong Stilton the stuff that makes you pull a face at it.

Although I never understood why people hold onto expensive bottles for as the special occasion that rarely ever arrives, There is a nice bottle of brandy under the stair that I am forbidden from drinking grrrr..

Haha I know its an odd situation, its there to be drunk, but it would be a shame to open it after all this time. Ah well I have kegs and bottles to work thorough tonight!

Read my post about 1949 liebfraumilch!
Port is already old by the time it's bottled and unlikely to improve further and may even decline.
I failed to persuade my daughter to open a 30 year old armagnac this xmas with the same arguement, but her reluctance was based on 2 sound concepts:
1: Her father-in-law and I would have polished it off in an alarmingly short time
2: The magical promise spell would have been broken. Better to travel in hope than arrive disappointed.
I recently dug out a bottle of 'Vieille Marc de Bourgogne', which didn't taste too good 10 years ago, and tastes no better now!

Too rich for me...
but it has put me in the mood for one of my favourite gargles...
A Pint of Guinness with a Port and Tia Maria chaser... :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink: :drink:
one of the classics.... I laughed out loud at the very suggestion but it is indeed a marvellous combination

Very nice. I'd drink it if it were mine.
I gained a taste for vintage ports (& wines) in my early 20's (25years ago!) when I worked in a cocktail bar of a 5* hotel. We decanted them to serve by the glass & of course we had to know what we were selling! I've had several of that era.... Warres 1960, taylors 1966, fonseca............etc etc. :drink:
Fwiw, I was under the impression that vintage ports do age once bottled. Yeah Lbv's I'd say have done thier thing but vintage is a different thing?

Hmmm I may just look into this, I think I had a quick look when I fitst stated homebrewing, all I remember reading was its fortified wine, but I had no idea what that mean at the time, and I still don't know

This is a good port recipe but triple the sugar content then let it age for 2 years did this when i was 13 shhhh dont tell no-one.

Fortified wine has some neutral-tasting spirits added to it.
The full gory detail is of course on wiki.
