Tesco ruby red? Well it's a start and a cut above the original 'ruby red', which was 50% port and 50% meths. This came into fashion when they started trying to make meths unpalateable.
Try stepping up to tawny port, only slightly more expensive, and note the difference. I did. I went to Porto and did the rounds in the local bodega. We had previously tanked up on white port on the other side of the river before crossing the bridge. Nonetheless we were given a whole bottle of white port, followed by ruby and then by tawny, which sounded like tony, to which my partner remarked: Thats his port!
We staggerred back across the bridge and found one of those special places that serve only port and tried a glass of 40 year old stuff before trying to locate the cheap room we had booked for the night, and would have slept well but for all the noise.
A memerable Porto day.
