Marmite

and oxo cubes and milk??? :nono: that's just plain perverted

Ha ha, don't knock it till you've tried it. Most people have the same reaction but I just remember my Grandad used to make it up in a flask when he took me fishing as a kid, but I suppose if I'd been introduced to it in later life I might have had the same thoughts as you.
Give it a bash, you might just like it :thumb:

couple years ago I had 100 free range chickens, I would always put some marmite in some of the water drinkers, the chickens would only drink the water with marmite in, couldn't get enough

when the customers came for the eggs they would always ask why my eggs were so tasty and why was the yolks so rich in colour, never did tell them

so if you have ay chickens try marmite in their water

yes I like marmite to

cwiseman77 told us about his marmite addiction.

My SWMBO says it could be your body telling you that you need more B vitamins. :hmm:

I love the stuff but a jar lasts several weeks in our house.

Might be actually. I recently started taking Vit B, C & D so hopefully my cravings will subside...doubt it tho

PS forgot to mention - its good for animals too - cats n dogs - you can buy brewers yeast from pet shops for them.
It helps felines get rid of furr balls too - my cat absoulutely loves the stuff, i even have her - her own jar of it - an empty one of mine that i smear the stuff round the rim and she happily licks it off when i open it for her. :D

+1 for Marmite, mam always used to make me Marmite sandwiches for school and I remember all the other kids thought it was wired! Missus thinks its feckin' disgusting though :D

Interesting about the chickens One-eye.

Marmite does contain B vits, when you drink booze it uses up your bodies B vits, as a nurse, when we have alcohol dependent patients we give them an IV drip called Pabrinex, its a yellow solution and it reeks. I looked at the formula and basically it is all of your B vits concentrated, so keep on eating Marmite!!

I too love Marmite, and when I was teaching in Thailand, where they love strong flavours, such as Durian and fish sauce (they have an ingredient called Pla La, which is basically fish they bury in clay pots for a couple of months, before digging it up and adding it to a Somtam salad!!), I thought I'd try a senses test during a science lesson, so to test their taste I tried a bunch of 6yr olds with Marmite. One kid loved it and was dipping his finger in and licking it, he got his mate to try it who promptly projectile vomited over the class and his books. An extreme case of love it or hate it I guess!!

I love the stuff so do my boys especially on homemade bread with lashings of butter.

Anyway if anyone fancies making it then have a look here

A bit long winded labour intensive and probably not worth the hassle. But perhaps one for our resident kitchen alchemist screamlead

I was on a business trip in the UK with a German colleague.
At breakfast he thought Marmite was similar to nutella, he layered it on big time.

His face was a picture when he bit into it.
I send him a small jar every Christmas...........he sends it straight back.

+1 here for Marmite too.

I don't eat anywhere near a jar a week though.
interesting to know about feeding it to chickens, and we have cats, so I might try that out tonight.
Not sure I want to encourage that though as they already jump on the worktop when I'm eating breaky, and they love cheese, butter, milk etc, so I don't want to give them something else they can be attracted to.

marmite cat treats, now there's an idea/marketing gimick.

marmite on toast is fab - especially if you put toast one side, then spread butter, then marmite, then layer cheese, and then toast the second side.
also good on bacon sandwiches, and in the sauce used in chilli.

Yes but it depends on what bread I bake sometimes the sour dough is too crusty or 'ripe' so I have to resort to the Warbutons   for them

However this weeks granary went done very well. :thumb:

LOL GA i did seriously think about it at one stage seeing as its so expensive here. But TBH swmbo would go mad with the smell as she hates the stuff and i dont think i;d have the patience to wait so long to make it either.

Marmite is the dogs, my work day breakfast is:
2 slices granary toast with peanut butter and marmite. don't knock it til youve tried it ;)
1 slice butter and marmite.
1 slice with butter and honey. a bit of sweetness to finish off.
2 cups black tea.
If I had hair I'm sure it would nice and glossy! :D

That's almost as bad as an old manager of mine who used to have chocolate spread and ham on a bagel

I've just located a marmite 'recipe' that I came across some time ago. It's on a fantastic blog that, contrary to expectations from the url, is NOT only about marmite:

http://marmitelover.blogspot.pt/2011/04 ... rmite.html

I understand that the trick is in breaking down the yeast cells. The cell walls need to be split somehow.

I may be up for trying this at some point. It does seem a shame to throw out the last litre of yeast & stuff from the bottom of the FV... And judging by the length of this thread, there may be quite a lot of interest and support on this forum!
