Offence, or what is offensive is subjective. And.... has a grey area sitting in the middle of it.
My wife travelled to Boston some 12 years back for business related stuff, and was out one evening with the group for some drinks. Arriving in an Irish Bar she was perturbed to see amongst the cocktails one titled "Car Bomb" Not offensive in Boston, but probably a no-no in a bar in London. Having walked past the Harrods car bomb with my mother in 83, not 7 minutes before it went off, I would have just walked out of that bar and found somewhere else.
To play devil's advocate, what is too offensive? Were a stout to be named N#gger-juice (Symbol used for good reason) then I'd imagine most would find it offensive. However a racist EDL knob would probably be calling it an acceptable name, after all "It's just a name innit!"
Maybe it's a scale, from 1 to 10? With 1 being names that are bland and boring and will offend no one. And 10 being similar to my above mentioned name for a stout? Somewhere in the middle are clever names that are imaginative and maybe witty too. Head up a little and they get edgy for some people, and okay for others?
It's an impossible subject really, so subjective.
Just my two hapeth...
