Hey guys,

I was just wondering....

Would it be possible to take a nordic pot, place a false bottom in but bellow that have a heater element and thermostat with temp controller to make sure the temp is stable and then use as a mash tun?

Or would this have some kind of adverse effect?

Thanks guys

KMC

Not really you'd have a very large dead space under the False bottom, you'd doubtfully get any convection of the water through the grain bed and end up nearly boiling the wort before the temp of the grain bed would rise, and then you may get carmelisation of the wort on the element.
You want to look at a RIMS or HERMS system for keeping the mash temp stable, but if you got a Nordic Thermobox you don't need to keep it stable they'll hold temp for over 8 hrs and loose 0.2 degree C

Your strike water is always hotter than the final mash temp to allow for the cooling of the grain, so if your heating it up whilst doughing in you'll end up with a mash @ too hot a temperature

You'd also run the risk of creating a cloud of gas under the grain bed/false bottom if the element boiled the liquid, which could result in the grain bed erupting violently, or the elements over heating and blowing.
