Allergy advise please

Hi gang - Just over two years ago I found out the hard way that I was allergic to Barley! swelling lips and face and an elephant man syndrome whilst walking to the doctors in Canada.

I've never had a problem whilst drinking lager or beer (only paying for it)

I eventually want to do an AG brew in the not too distant future, does any one know if going down the AG route will make a difference to the brewers like Carling or Carlsberg re the usage of barley etc etc I know it will be the same sort of principal as commercial brewers but any sound advise would be great.

Try gluten free recipes on google.

What form of ingested barley causes the problem?

if you drink a full bottle of stewarts cream of the barley then u might end up with elephant man syndrome!

Hi Evanvine, the only time I had an allergic reaction was whilst in Canada in an Irish pub run by a friend of mine and I decided to have the Barley & Beef soup, it was put in front of me and the spoon I had stood up as there was so much barley in the dish(it was a big dish as well).

The allergist here in Blighty said the same, how come your'e alright with beer?

Allergic to barley :shock: now thats a nightmare. What are you brewing at the moment, I take it its kits or extract will would all have been made with malted barley. Even Carling uses malted barley so maybe its unmalted barley your allergic to.

May I also add to the equation that I suffer from Hay fever just in June, and yes this has perplexed me also as I have no allergic reaction to drinking Carling which actually states that it is made with British barley, maybe I'm allergic to Canadian barley or Irish pubs :lol:

Allergies are so hard to identify, it suggests it was definatly something you did eat or drink because of your lips swelling and face swelling up.. I suffer from hives in the winter months , sometimes upto 4-5 months at a time, i dont know what it is so annoying!!

Mikecfc, went to an allergist at my local hospital and he confirmed after taking 6, yes 6 tubes of my precious blood that I was in fact allergic to Barley also grass pollen and buying rounds(how he knew that was a mystery).

Buying rounds... that is a very common allergy when you consider the cost of pints in pubs now..

are you sure that it wasn't an issue brought on by walking to Canada to see the doctor? it's a long way that...

Don't remind me Golder as I'm at my brothers wedding tomorrow in a fancy hotel, so don't want to think how much a pint will be.
Even thought of taking loads of homebrew and popping out to the car and filling my glass :whistle:

btw I am allergic to something in some beers/ wines, I have no idea what - but my own beers or wines have never caused an issue

I think home brew in the car has to be a fine idea, get a chillbag in there too... genius plan... cold homebrewed deliciousness for next too nothing or..... £3.50 plus for a pint of chemical horse waz!!

There is precious little difference between malted barley and 'raw barley', although following on from the brewing process a lot of the long chain protein molecules have been lost and the little ones (like Gluten, hordeins and gliardins) remain. It could well be that your allergy is to something that is lost during the brewing process, but remains when barley is cooked. . . .It is your health though . . . I would experiment on a small scale first and see if that caused any major issues.

Lol, I think I was quite tipsy when I typed that, I am quite sure in fact as I have no memory of typing it whatsoever, cider is a dangerous thing :P
